Test: Infiniti Q50

The 1989 established luxury brand of Japanese car maker Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. should first stand for brand image in the United States and Canada. After work, Nissan expanded the engagement from 2008, among others, on Europe. In the meantime, INFINITI's Q30, Q50, Q60 and Q70 models as well as the corresponding QX models are pushing very strongly into the European market. What began with a respectful success now ends in a market share between 0,1 and 0,5% in Germany. With the Q50, the mid-range sport sedan, the Japanese also launched 2013 in the summer with a new name in their vehicle portfolio worldwide. Relaunching 2016 as a facelift, the Q50 not only experienced minor cosmetic corrections, but was also the first car in the brand to combine its driver assistance systems under the brand's own development name "ProPILOT". The systems should lead the vehicle to autonomous driving at the latest 2018. With just two gasoline engines, a diesel and a hybrid drive, Nissan engineers are launching the Q50 sedan on the German market. The Q50 2.2d Sport Tech with automatic transmission we tested starts at dealerships with a price of 52.800 Euro.

Test report: Infiniti Q50 2.2d Sport Tech AT

Japanese sporty touring sedan
The Q50, a car for the D segment.

The luxury brand is being marketed in Germany in 10 Infiniti centers of the Japanese manufacturer. Changes to this are in full swing at the parent company based in Switzerland. They should be completed by April 2018. In the D segment, Infiniti has been launching the Q2013, a sports and touring sedan, since mid-50. The designers were allowed to lend a hand again to update the Q50. The typical Infiniti double arch grille clearly marks the beginning. From there, the Japanese draw a line that extends over the bead that begins at the end of the headlights to the rear lights. LED lights at the front and rear give the vehicle an elegant touch, while the lower ground clearance compared to the basic versions gives the Q50 Sport Tech a sporty look.

Broad and confident performance.

Interior with thoughtful concept

"The Q50's passenger compartment has been designed with artistic skill, allowing passengers to travel in comfort and style. In the Q50 of the new model year, these qualities are taken to a new level with hand-crafted materials that convey an even greater sense of build quality than ever before. "Said Alfonso Albaisa, Executive Design Director of INFINITI. We were able to convince ourselves of this processing extensively. The test car at least gave us the feeling, but we have to tell other brands that the competitors have already arrived there. The expected hard plastic in Japanese vehicles has long gone soft foamed plastic and leather surfaces with filigree seams that invite to test their feel. The rest of the interior is of high quality. The cockpit is also clearly designed and intuitive to use. The seated in the middle of the dashboard display is used to display the navigation map, back- front and overview camera and phone settings and mirror link for applications. If the seating is set precisely, this ensures a proper all-round view. The atmosphere is harmonious, there is also generous space for the arms, legs and head and in the front seats as well as in the rear. The seats give us a pleasant lateral support. The entry and exit is also convenient thanks to quite large door openings. In the trunk can be stowed without modification up to 450 liter. A trouble-free accommodation of two large suitcases is ensured by the fairly wide tailgate. Larger load can be stowed well by the divided in the ratio 60: 40 folding rear seat. An electric opening and closing of the tailgate is missing in today's trend. Whether its generous dimensions and its wheelbase 2,85 m, we get along well with the Q50 in dense city traffic.

Interior with leather interior.

Powerful 2.2 diesel

The Q2,2 Sport Tech owes its narrow 125 liters of diesel to its average consumption, which is based on 170 kW (50 PS), the elastic seven-stage dual-clutch transmission and start-stop automatic, developed by Daimler at Daimler. This translates into 4,5 grams of carbon dioxide emissions per year Kilometers thanks to optimized wind-slipperiness (Cw value of 119). The unit is never overwhelmed in the entire test and brings between 0,27 to 1.600 tours lush 2.800 Newtonmeter on the crankshaft, which gives him a sovereign smoothness. During our rides, the Q400 also casually removes bumps, has a very stable overall appearance and offers comfortable handling. After all, he is on the list of efficient vehicles with the specified values in the upper third. In the everyday traffic flow, the specified fuel consumption can not always keep just because of the driving pleasure. In the test process (use of city, country and highway traffic) of 50 days we need around 14 liters.

Diesel with 400 Newtonmeter torque.

Plenty of equipment with a high price

The list of equipment of the Infiniti Q50 ex works is extensive. In its "basic" version there are already six airbags, touchscreen infotainment system, on-board computer, brake assistant, hill start aid, electronic parking brake, exterior mirrors with LED indicator indicators, active lane control (ATC), cruise control and speed limiter. The equipment variants "Premium" and "Premium Tech" include comfort features such as LED daytime running lights, 19-inch aluminum rims, two-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, adaptive headlights (AFS - Adaptive Front-lighting System), Smart Beam (automatic switching between remote / Low beam) and LED headlights with automatic level control. Infiniti's surcharge policy is unfortunately very risky at our discretion, because the update from the “base” to the “premium” variant costs EUR 3.300 and the further distance to the “Premium Tech” equipment even costs EUR 8.150. The Q50 2.2d Sport Tech is the top model for diesel engines. It rounds off the entire Q50 package. Infiniti is calling 52.8000 euros for this variant.

The Q50 is quite business like.

And finally ... The Q50 shows the picture of a successful sporty touring sedan. The Japanese car manufacturer offers a car-free package with the D-segment vehicle in the Sport Tech variant. Here not only the vehicle, but also the brand earns the title "Premium".
