The Alfa Stelvio: athletes without quirks

Auch Alfa can be the SUV- Don't close the trend. The Italians remain true to the Stelvio.

The never-ending SUV boom has also been a force for a long time Sportauto-Bauer, a chunky one Crossover to be included in the program. Seldom succeeds in jacking up one's own brand character as well as with the Alfa Stelvio.

Standard weaker

A popular means of growing a sports UV is the application of brute motor power. Alfa can also go this way convincingly, as the Stelvio top variant Quadrifoglio Verde with 375 kW / 510 PS from six cylinders has shown. The standard model of the Alfa Stelvio with 2,0-liter turbo gasoline engine, on the other hand, has to make do with significantly less power, either 147 kW / 200 PS or 206 kW / 280 PS are in the data sheet for the four-cylinder. At least the stronger version hardly leaves anything to be desired in terms of performance.

The two-liter engine is linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive and accelerates the massive mid-range SUV to 5,7 km / h in 100 seconds, with a maximum of 230 km / h. You can feel it: After a brief second of reaction, the Italian implements the accelerator command in emphatic and almost impetuous propulsion. Not only with the help of the ample torque of 400 Nm, but also at a relatively high speed. The needle willingly storms up to just over 5.000 tours, only to be slowed down electronically afterwards.

More would be possible, but not allowed for emission reasons. Nevertheless, the four-cylinder shows its virile character, accompanied by a powerful sound that - technically modulated and acoustically amplified - is directed into the passenger cabin. The environment is relatively spared, and the neighbor can continue to sleep in the morning if the Alfa lets the starter turn.

Easy to handle

The chassis is decidedly sporty. Above all, the direct and very precise steering make the comparatively light SUV appear even more manageable than it is thanks to numerous aluminum parts, and the jagged brakes reliably decelerate it in case of doubt. In the curve, the Stelvio, named after a South Tyrolean mountain pass, prevents any excessive body movement, always appears precise and easy to control. The springs and dampers are not even set too hard at all, but offer decent travel comfort. The stoic calm on the autobahn and the relaxed straight line invite you to go on long tours. Consumption can also be reduced to a decent level with a steady drive: there is a good eight liters in it, but those who drive faster have to reckon with double-digit values.

Alfa Stelvio
Chic Italian

Unlike many earlier Alfa models, the Stelvio does not buy its sporty character with quirkiness or eccentricity. The five-seater SUV is spacious, well-made and thoughtfully furnished. An electric tailgate, the 230 volt socket in the trunk and a clever rail system in the luggage compartment make good use of the space advantage of the body concept. The driver's workstation itself is nicely furnished and easy to use. Small specialties such as the start button integrated into the steering wheel or the oil temperature gauge ensure originality and flair on board. Whether the Stelvio does justice to the brand's brightly shining design history is something every viewer has to answer for himself - the Alfa is definitely not a particularly slender representative of its class.

Perfect SUV for everyday life and driving fun

In terms of price, the Stelvio is at most discreet in the 200 hp entry-level version, which is available for around 50.000 euros. With the more powerful four-cylinder, at least 60.000 euros are due, the top version "Veloce Ti" with a particularly sporty look, carbon trim and 20-inch rims, available since the facelift in spring, is in the price list for 72.500 euros. In return, however, there is at least a real SUV athlete with everyday practical virtues - and above all with Italian flair.
