The head-up display: a small projector for a big cinema

The Head-Up Display has proven itself as a popular new car extra or even as a relatively short period of time standard equipment established. The next generation should now become even more powerful.

The entire windshield is to become a head-up display in the future. Supplier Infineon has developed a projection technology that is novel according to its own information, which requires significantly less space in the dashboard and at the same time offers a larger display. According to the manufacturer, the so-called micro-opto-electro-mechanical system (MOEMS) works with a very compact combination of laser beam scanner, rotatable mirror and battery, so that it can be used not only in the vehicle, but also in AR glasses , such as those specially designed for motorists. Information from the route planner, the assistance technology or from the infotainment system can be displayed here as well as there. The technology could hit the streets before the middle of the decade.

Small head-up displays at the moment

Head-up displays use small projectors in the dashboard to reflect information relevant to the current driving situation into the driver's field of vision. In the case of cheaper systems, they are displayed on small plastic panes, in more complex systems directly in the windshield. However, it is usually limited to relatively small areas. In addition to Infineon, other suppliers such as Bosch and Continental are also working on optimizing the display, for example in terms of size, color spectrum or resolution.
