The last diesels

The Diesel it is becoming increasingly difficult. It is often no longer available, especially in small and inexpensive models. There are still a few bargains for diesel engines.

Diesel driving has almost become a luxury. While diesel engines used to be available in every price and vehicle class, the range has shrunk significantly since the emissions scandal. At the same time, the more stringent pollutant requirements have increased the technology costs for the remaining models. Anyone who wants a new diesel engine for little money today has to look for a long time. We found five examples with base prices below 25.000 euros - from small to relatively large.

First of all: In the small car class or with most Asian importers, you no longer need to look. While this combination ensured attractive prices just over 10.000 euros a good decade ago, it can no longer be found on the new car market today. The price-sensitive segment and the increasingly expensive drive no longer fit together. So the diesel starts nowadays in the small car class. And only to do something for less than 16.000 euros in exceptional cases. A real selection is only available from around 20.000 euros. Investing in the economical diesel can be worthwhile in the long run - especially for those who drive a lot. Whether in the city or on the motorway, the combination of range and cost per kilometer means that the diesel is still top-notch.

Dacia Lodgy Blue HDi 100

If you are looking for a new diesel car that is as cheap as possible, you are generally right with the Romanians. Because the Renault subsidiary has cut its diesel range, the cheapest HDi on offer is a relatively large model: the five- to seven-seater van Lodgy. The basic version with the 16.290 kW / 85 hp 116-liter engine costs 1,5 euros. The equipment is not as incomplete as one might fear (among other things, air conditioning, cruise control and roof rails are on board), if you invest 800 euros more, you get the more chic “Stepway” variant in off-road style. Official consumption of the manual model: 4,2 to 4,4 liters per 100 kilometers.

Vauxhall Corsa 1.5 Diesel

Of the once lavish diesel range (there were still six variants on the Corsa D), only one is left in the current generation of the small car. The 75 kW / 102 PS four-cylinder should be satisfied with a consumption of 4,0 liters in the best case, but in return it offers reasonable performance (Vmax 188, 10,9 seconds from zero to 100), which is good for the generally agile set-up of the Rüsselsheimer fit. Prices start at 20.270 euros since the base model, which is a good 2.000 euros cheaper, was taken out of the range. In terms of equipment, the most important thing is on board.

Ford Focus 1.5 Eco Blue

From the compact class, the range of diesel models is growing again. There are at least three options for the Ford Focus, but only one of them remains below the 25.000 euro threshold: the 70 kW / 95 hp basic four-cylinder. The 1,5-liter engine is naturally heavily challenged by the nearly 4,38-meter-long five-door, also when it comes to thirst: With 4,2 to 4,8 liters, it is one of the thirstier models in comparison, at least in terms of standard consumption. In addition, the equipment is comparatively poor, which is particularly painful, since many extras for the basic diesel are not available even for an additional fee.

fiat type 1.3

The Italians are best known for cheap small cars, but have also had a real loadmaster in their range in Germany with the Tipo Kombi since the end of 2016. The compact looks modern and high-quality on the outside, and offers up to 1.650 liters of luggage space on the inside. If you choose the 70 kW / 95 PS diesel, you pay an inexpensive 22.500 euros and don't even have to do without the most important extras. In addition to cruise control and air conditioning, there is also a touchscreen infotainment system on board. Above all, optical extras such as painted bumpers and softer plastics in the interior have to be dispensed with. However, you don't need to expect particularly dynamic driving performance.

Citroen C3 Aircross Blue HDI 110

A few months ago there were even several compact SUVs in the price range up to 25.000 euros. As if they had agreed, they are now at 26.000 euros plus. So in the price range we have chosen, there is little choice when it comes to crossover. Even in the mini class, the models are either too expensive or no longer available with diesel. The Citroen C2017 Aircross, which has been available since 3, is one of the few offers of jacked up cars. As the 81 kW / 110 PS strong Blue HDI 110, the almost 4,16 meter long French model costs 22.840 euros in the simplest version. And even the second highest line, "Shine", is just under the limit at 24.450 euros. Then there is even a little luxury such as automatic air conditioning, a navigation system and 16-inch aluminum wheels on board.
