The A-Class for escaping from everyday life
The new GLA is based on the compact A-Class, but is a good 4.41 centimeters longer at 10 meters. Despite the higher structure, the drag coefficient of 0.29 is still surprisingly good. After all, the new GLA aims to bridge the gap between the classic compact car and a practical compact off-roader.
With the four well-known model series in the SUV segment (G, GL, ML and GLK), the new GLA is now the completion of the range down to the booming “compact SUV” market.
Advanced in design and handy in handling
The objective for the new GLA was clearly outlined. He has to appeal to a new group of buyers in the design and in any case receive a dynamic character. In addition, a compact SUV must be equipped with a simple for the driver to use four-wheel drive and convey on paved roads much driving pleasure.
Mercedes wants to have mastered this splits in the new GLA, thanks to modern engines and a new development stage of the in-house 4matic all-wheel drive.

The wheels of the compact SUV will be optionally available up to a size of 19 inches. In order to achieve the best drag coefficient, the GLA was given a fully variable “radiator shutter”. In this way, the air resistance and the cooling requirements of the units can be optimally adjusted.

With 421 liters, the trunk in the basic configuration already offers 80 liters more space than in the basic A-Class. The increased overall length is not only good for the passengers but also for the luggage. A cargo package will be available as an option, with which it will be possible, among other things, to put the rear seat back in a steeper position so that more space (+60 liters) is available in the luggage compartment.
Engine and drive
At the start, Mercedes-Benz will offer four engines, including two petrol and two diesel each. The petrol variants in the GLA 200 will get 1.6 PS from 156 liters and 2.0 PS from 211 liters in the GLA 250. The diesels are in both cases blessed with 2.2 liter capacity and deliver 200 PS in the GLA 136 CDI and 220 PS in the GLA 170 CDI.
All engines feature turbocharging and gasoline direct injection as well as start / stop in series.
The GLA 250 4matic with 211 PS handles the spurt from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.5 seconds and is fast up to 235 km / h. In the EU standard consumption Mercedes-Benz still indicates a consumption of only 7.1 liters on 100 kilometers!
Thanks to extensive development work on the engine, the 300 Nm strong GLA 200 CDI (136 PS) achieves a standard consumption of just 4.3 liters per 100 kilometers and thus CO² emissions of 114g / km. The GLA 220 CDI reaches 350 Nm.
All engines can be combined with the manual six-speed gearbox or optionally with the 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
Further developed assistance systems
Numerous driver assistance systems support and relieve the driver in the GLA. As standard, the new compact SUV has, among other things, the ATTENTION ASSIST fatigue detection system and the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST with adaptive brake assist, which provides protection from as little as 7 km / h
Collisions offers.
In combination with DISTRONIC PLUS (special equipment) this becomes COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS. It has an additional function: if the risk of a collision persists and the driver fails to react, the system can also perform autonomous braking up to speeds of 200 km / h, thereby reducing the severity of an accident with slower moving or stopping vehicles. The system also brakes stationary vehicles up to a speed of 30 km / h and can up to
20 km / h Avoid rear-end collisions.
In addition, there are tried-and-tested assistance systems in the GLA, such as the Lane Package with Blind Spot and Lane Keeping Assist or the Adaptive High Beam Assist as special equipment. Active Parking Assist (special equipment) enables automatic parking in parallel and perpendicular parking spaces.

Presentation and prices
The GLA will celebrate its world premiere at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt in September. The first customers will receive the new GLA 2014. The prices will be presented at the IAA at the latest.
