Unique test of the new Jaguar I-Pace

OK. Right at the beginning of the article we have to row back. That was not a real test. The Jaguar I-Pace was presented to some journalists before the start of the Geneva Motor Show, and somehow we were all in it, but who saw our video, understands it was not yet a test:

Jaguar I-Pace - the electric island solution?

Visually, the I-Pace is not necessarily a Stromer. The fact that the large grille is not responsible for the transformation of waste heat from a combustor can only be seen when you bump your nose with the claws on the cat's paw in the Jaguar logo. And the design is not unusual either, a hip mix of coupe and SUV is currently very popular and the I-Pace fulfills exactly these requirements. A sporty SUV, that much should be understood at first glance.

The best news about the new I-Pace? For electric car fans, it is already being sold from €77.850, with plenty of room for improvement. The list for the extensively equipped “First Edition” costs over 101k euros. And the best news for Jaguar fans who haven't had anything to do with electric so far? Well, the I-Pace is probably one of the most dynamic things you can currently order in this size in the SUV segment. The British are cleverly exploiting the torque advantages of the concept. And of course the I-Pace has all-wheel drive. Two electric motors are responsible for a system output of 400 hp. And with almost 700 Nm of system torque from zero speed, the 2.2 ton SUV has an easy time infighting with the laws of physics.

4.8 seconds should go from zero to 100, 200 km / h are possible. These are values that fit the class of the vehicle and appear quite reasonable. The fact that the WLTP cycle also goes 480 km speaks for a reasonable range in everyday life, according to the old NEDC standard it would have been 545 km. The battery got a capacity to live with at the start. 90 kWh is not the maximum if you think in TESLA worlds, but is sufficient for a series SUV crossover with the aspiration to master everyday life. The I-Pace can be recharged, for example, via its 100 kW quick charger - this means that around 40% of the range can be filled up in around 80 minutes. For home, Jaguar has unfortunately limited itself to a 7kW charger, if you master three sets, you will recognize that a 90 kWh battery can easily take 13 hours to fully charge.

The platform of the I-Pace is a completely new one in the Jaguar LandRover group. The TATA subsidiary has not yet confirmed any other models, but in conversation with JLR's chief technology officer, Wolfgang Ziebart, it becomes clear - the chassis is certainly not only made for this one model. And even if the installation space for the batteries is currently maxed out with 90 kWh, an even larger battery is not possible, it does not have to remain with the capacity. The developments in battery technology are overwhelming. A Land Rover purely electric? Why not? The I-Pace even as the basis for a new E-Defender? We will see.

And how does he drive?

Electric cars know how to please. Even if you are actually only a fan of big and strong cars. The ad hoc torque and the resulting dynamics are things that fascinate you. Especially if you concentrate on wildly blinking hats for only three minutes. Power and traction were just as important as the agility of the I-Pace. There is nothing more to report - there will be more if we have been able to drive the I-Pace in detail!
