It offers good space, is a little loading miracle and has two sliding doors. Nevertheless, the little one could FROM Ford B-Max does not prevail against the popular SUV. Used car buyers need not be bothered by this.

The highlight are the two sliding doors on the side

Small cars with two sliding doors are rare and not particularly successful. That was what the Peugeot 2005, presented in 1007, had to experience, which was withdrawn from the market after only four years. In 2012, Ford tried to make the small Van B-Max attractive to buyers with this door layout. At that time, however, customers were already enjoying more SUVs than practical vans, so the B-Max had to give way in 2017 in favor of the Eco Sport.

Body and interior

The 4,08 meter long Ford B-Max is based on the then current Fiesta generation. At 1,60 meters in height, the van towers over its technology gene dispenser by 10 centimeters. At the latest when the B-Max is in a parking lot with the rear doors open, the most striking differences to the Fiesta are noticeable: the two sliding side doors. As if that weren't enough, there are no B-pillars, so the rear door openings are very large. This makes getting in and out of the rear very easy.

However, you have to use force to open and close the heavy doors. Another typical Fiesta is the center console, overloaded with buttons and switches, which can only be operated in practice. The space for the passengers is okay, but the van shows its real talent when loading. While the standard trunk with just over 300 liters still offers a small car format, when the rear seat backrests are folded down, almost 1.400 liters of storage space is created. If you fold down the front passenger seat, the Ford shows itself to be a small miracle of space. This means that long items from the hardware store or from a take-away furniture store can also be transported.

Motors and drive

The engine range consists of gasoline and diesel, and Ford also offered a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) variant. The volume unit of the B-Max was the 1,0-liter three-cylinder turbo gasoline engine, which is available in the expansion stages with 74 kW / 100 PS, 88 kW / 120 PS (from 2013: 92 kW / 125 PS) and 103 kW / 140 PS became. The turbos convince with torque (170 to 200 Nm). On average, they consume around 5 liters, but tend to be thirsty when they move quickly.

The two suction gasoline engines produce 66 kW / 90 PS (1.4) and 77 kW / 105 PS (1.5), come up with 128 and 150 Nm and have average consumption values of 6 to 6,4 liters. The 90 hp unit was also available as an LPG version. The 105 hp naturally aspirated engine is the only B-Max engine that is coupled to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission (Powershift); the other engines have a manual five-speed transmission that transmits power to the front axle.

Ford also had two diesel engines on offer, a 1,5-liter with 55 kW / 75 PS and a 1,6-liter with 70 kW / 95 PS. Here, an average of around 4 liters flow through the lines.

Equipment and safety

If you are looking for a little comfort, you should disregard the lower entry-level equipment lines when looking for a used car. Or at least look carefully to see whether the first owner had booked an air conditioning or a radio. The highest line "Titanium" leaves little to be desired, but here too there were still options, for example to upgrade with navigation, voice control or keyless access. In terms of safety, however, the B-Max was properly set up with seven airbags, among other things. The van received a 5-star rating in the NCAP crash test. The emergency brake assistant was not part of the standard equipment, and those who value it also have to look carefully. Also optionally available were a reversing camera, heated windscreen, heated seats, parking beeps for front and rear and an emergency call assistant.

Quality

The B-Max does well in the TÜV main inspection and masters it better than the average of all tested vehicles. But there are also weak points that the TÜV inspectors often criticize. This includes, for example, the lighting system. With older B-Max models, you should also keep an eye on the springs and dampers as well as the brake discs. Oil loss can occur even in younger age groups; it is best to take a closer look at the parking space of the vehicle.

Conclusion on the Ford B-Max

Small but mighty: That probably applies to the Ford B-Max. It can make drivers happy who do not adhere to the trendy SUV body shapes but want a special door concept. At least 4.000 euros are called for the small van in the used car portals. For well-equipped specimens from 5.000 euros are required.
