Used car check: Nissan X-Trail (T32)

More softened SUV as a robust off-roader: the Nissan The third generation of the X-Trail underwent an image change. Does he also show himself to be good at the TÜV?

When the Nissan X-Trail came onto the market in 2001, it belonged to the category of "robust off-roaders" and impressed with its masculine look and off-road capability. The second generation (2007 to 2014) already relied on somewhat softer shapes, the third (T32) has completely discarded the angular and has mutated into an SUV. The question remains, how does this X-Trail fare at TÜV.

Body and interior

The design of the third generation X-Trail is based on the successful little brother Qashqai. Instead of edges there are more curves, the look is more reminiscent of a softie than an outdoorsman. The 4,64 meter long Japanese also took on a task of Qashqai on his debut. Since this was no longer offered as a seven-seater, the 26 centimeter longer model had to be used if more than four to five people were to be transported. For a surcharge, the X-Trail can be equipped with two retractable additional seats in the rear and then take up to seven passengers on tour. Thanks to the wheelbase of 2,71 meters, people who are not too tall sit comfortably in seats six and seven, at least for short distances - as long as the rear seat users can see and use the adjustment option of the longitudinally sliding bench forwards. The trunk offers plenty of space. In the seven-seater configuration it is between 135 and 1.877 liters, in the five-seater 550 to 1.982 liters. The interior is functional and factual.

Automatically saved design

In 2017, the Japanese received a facelift. The models can be recognized by, among other things, a wider radiator grille, modified bumpers and modified lights. In the interior there is a steering wheel with a flattened bottom and optionally heated, as well as more chrome applications.

Motors and drive

At the market launch, customers had no choice. There was a 1,6-liter diesel with 96 kW / 130 PS and 320 Nm. Another diesel followed at the end of 2016. The 2,0-liter has an output of 130 kW / 177 hp. 380 Nm are available, the average consumption is specified with 5,6 liters and is half a liter higher than the 1.6. As an alternative to the manual switch, both diesel engines have a continuously variable CVT transmission. With the available 4 × 4 versions of the diesel, you can choose between front-wheel drive, automatic four-wheel drive or the fixed distribution of the engine power in a ratio of 50:50 to both axles by means of a rotary knob.
The petrol engine, which has been a supplement to the portfolio since the end of 2015 and was only available with front-wheel drive, is a little more thirsty than the diesel. The average consumption of the 1,6-liter turbo gasoline engine with 120 kW / 163 PS and 240 Nm is 6,2 liters.

In mid-2018, Nissan will take the 1,6-liter diesel out of its range. A year later, a 1,7-liter diesel with 110 kW / 150 PS replaced the 177 PS diesel. The 1,3-liter petrol engine with 117 kW / 160 hp, known from other models such as the Qashqai, replaces the 1.6. The X-Trail is now only available with this petrol engine and therefore only with front-wheel drive.

Equipment and safety

Air conditioning, aluminum wheels, front and rear parking sensors, LED daytime running lights or cruise control are standard on all versions. Emergency braking and lane keeping assistants such as traffic sign recognition are also on board ex works. For a surcharge, there were additional assistance systems for first-time buyers, including movement and fatigue detection and a parking and blind spot assistant. In the higher comfort lines or for an additional fee, features such as a navigation system with a 7-inch color touchscreen, reversing camera, leather, panoramic glass roof and a digital radio were attractive. The X-Trail received a five-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash test.

Since the facelift, the emergency brake assistant has also recognized pedestrians. In addition, the autonomous “ProPilot” driving system can take over control of the accelerator, steering and brakes on the motorway, in convoys and in traffic jams.

Quality

X-Trail owners should prepare well for the main TÜV inspection. The TÜV inspectors find weak points in the lighting system. Here only the indicators are not noticeable negatively. The brake system draws attention to itself negatively with less durable brake discs. When it comes to oil loss, the X-Trail is also at the forefront; Those interested in used cars should also have the chassis checked. The examiners complained about worn out sockets and worn joints.

Conclusion

The Nissan X-Trail offers plenty of space and numerous assistance systems. For the older models there is also all-wheel drive in combination with a diesel, so that loads of up to 2 tons can be hooked. Anyone interested in an X-Trail should have it checked by experts in order to avoid expensive surprises. Vehicles are for sale from around 10.000 euros; For models from the facelift you have to invest at least 15.000 euros.
