Used car check: Opel Crossland X

The Opel Crossland X offers a lot: decent space, a large trunk and many assistants. But it is also good for surprises, for example at TÜV.

Since mid-2017 the Opel Crossland x at the beginning. The city crossover shares the platform with the Peugeot 2008 and the Citroen C3 Aircross. Originally planned in 2012 as a purely cooperative development between the Rüsselsheim-based company and the PSA group, the French were already negotiating the takeover of Opel when the Crossland X made its debut. Since the first Crossland models have now had TÜV approval, this is a good opportunity to see how its quality is doing.

Body and interior

The 4,21 meter long Crossland X belongs to the mini-SUV category, which also includes the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur and Fiat 500X. Visually, it is immediately recognizable as a member of the Opel family: the classic creases are in place. The plastic planks around the wheel arches and a hint of underride protection at the front and rear of the off-roader set accents, but are only a nice appearance, since the Crossland X is only available with front-wheel drive. Opel style also prevails inside. The steering wheel, cockpit and shift gate are familiar from many models with the lightning bolt. The facelift that took place in early 2021 adapted the appearance of the now current design language with the so-called Vizor face. Since then, the model designation has dispensed with the “X”.

There is plenty of space on board

Thanks to its wheelbase of 2,60 meters, the small Opel offers good space for at least four people. The three-part rear seat, which can be moved by up to 15 centimetres, is practical, although it is not standard on all equipment versions. Depending on its position, the luggage part holds between 410 and 520 liters. If you fold down the backrests of the rear seats, the vehicle floor is level and the volume increases to 1.255 litres.

Motors and drive

In the range of engines you will only find conventional combustion engines from the PSA shelf. You can choose between a 1,2-litre three-cylinder with 60 kW/83 hp and the 1,2-litre three-cylinder turbo, which is also available with 96 kW/130 hp in addition to a 81 kW/110 hp version. A 1,5-litre diesel is available in the 81 kW/110 hp and 88 kW/122 hp versions. The standard consumption of petrol engines is between 4,7 and 5,2 liters, the self-igniters approve an average of between 3,5 and 5,5 liters of diesel. As an alternative to petrol and diesel, a liquid gas variant in combination with the 2017-liter naturally aspirated engine was also available between the end of 2018 and mid-1,2. Depending on the engine, power is transmitted by a manual five or six-speed switch or a six-speed automatic.

Instead of four-wheel drive, the first owner could at least order the adaptive traction control “Intelligrip”. It adapts the electronic driving aids to special requirements such as off-road trips or driving on snow at the push of a button.

Equipment and safety

The Crossland X, which costs from around 17.000 euros at the market launch, comes up with a decent standard equipment in the basic level "Selection". Air conditioning, DAB radio and lane assistant, traffic sign recognition and cruise control and speed limiter are standard. If you want it to look nicer, for example with roof rails, aluminum or two-tone paint, or more comfortable with automatic air conditioning, back-friendly AGR seats or modern infotainment systems, the other equipment versions can help. "edition"; "Innovation", "Ultimate" and, since 2021, "GS-Line" offer all kinds of amenities ex works or in add-on packages such as a head-up display, navigation system and a 180-degree panoramic rear-view camera. Anyone interested in a used car must therefore take a close look and compare which extras the first owner ordered. The Crossland X passed the NCAP crash test with a five-star rating.

Quality

The first main TV inspection shows the Crossland X light and shadow. The TÜV inspectors are already complaining about the brake discs and the axle springs. Anyone interested in used cars should take a close look here. Loss of oil is also an issue at TÜV. Axle suspension, steering, lighting and the exhaust system are unobtrusive.

Conclusion

The Opel Crossland X is a handy crossover that impresses with a good amount of space and a variable trunk. For older models with simple equipment you have to invest around 12.000 euros. Vehicles with higher comfort levels such as Ultimate start at around 15.000 euros.
