On vacation with the PHEV

AUTOHUB editor Bjoern Habegger tests the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid in everyday life. Range, reliability of technology and benefits - we look very closely!

Sun, holidays and no reach-fear!

In the plug-in Hybrid SUV on vacation

Part 4: Then we'll fill up as usual!

33.86, 34.07 and 37.38 liters - these are the number of liters for refueling during the holiday trip. Without the total distance driven, however, it is not meaningful. We drove a total of 1.242 km. This results in an average consumption of 8.48 liters. And now? Buh? Far too much for a PHEV?

Why 8.48 liters are good

From “behind Würzburg” to the Öztal Alps. You could now plan a route along charging stations. There are some fast chargers and of course a lot of type 2 charging stations along the way. One could plan. With your child and dog on board, you want one thing above all else: get from A to B quickly. And thanks to the plug-in hybrid concept, we drove off very quietly and with full batteries, but otherwise didn't bother about the charging infrastructure at all.

Silently to the highway

According to google maps it is 50.7 km from our front door to the motorway entrance. We drove exactly this route completely silently. Simply charge the battery from the starting point “Garage”. The Outlander PHEV was fully charged and, more importantly, fully charged. And it was dark - so we drove with the lights on. And the air conditioning was on!

route to the highway

Highway speed 135

435 km on the highway

From the motorway entrance it was another 435 km to “go on vacation”. The early departure, 4:00 in the morning, had a decisive advantage: everyone on board could still sleep - the dog, the child, the wife - only Mister Papa drove. And comfortably with the cruise control. Set to 135 km / h.

It showed once again: The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV - it beeps too much! Car recognized in front of the distance cruise control: It beeps. Car gone, he beeps. Interior temperature up or down, it beeps. No, if we were allowed to wish for something for the successor, it would primarily not even be a greater electrical range, it would rather be the possibility of configuring all the beeping noises: preferably to “Off”.

The Outlander PHEV tank is 45 liters - but you usually don't refill more than 40 liters. That is enough for the trip on vacation. Relaxed.

Tank strategy / Charge & Save in the mountains

Unfortunately, Sölden is a holiday destination that does not need any charging stations at all. We therefore relied on the Outlander PHEV's petrol engine for our very own “Charge & Save strategy”. Yes, charging the batteries by burning gasoline is ecologically valuable, but it doesn't make sense. Arriving at the next pass with empty batteries, but also very uncomfortable. Thanks to the possibility of charging the batteries at any time via the petrol engine, the complete absence of charging stations in Sölden was still manageable.

A battery charge of just under 12 kWh requires around 3 liters of petrol. If you consider this consumption, the overall result over the driven distance is impressive!

870 km of motorway - 372 km of country roads and mountain tours

8.48 liters per 100 kilometers sounds a lot, especially since the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is specified with 1.9 liters per 100 km. But if you think about the application scenario - highway, fully packed, mountains up, turning gasoline into electricity - then 8.48 liters are suddenly extremely impressive! Do that with another 4 × 4 SUV with a petrol engine!

The holiday tour has shown: the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is perfectly fit for the long haul and it does not cause a headache when there is a shortage of charging stations!

So you can go on vacation ...
