From 2023 the cloud will be in charge at VW

A good navigation system is worth its weight in gold, especially in electric cars. VW is planning for the year after next the big technology throw.

From 2023, VW will bring a new generation of navigation systems on board its vehicles. With an existing online connection, the route guide should obtain route suggestions based on real-time traffic data from the cloud, but should also be able to work offline if necessary. Cariad, the software forge of the entire group, promises, among other things, a new operating system and a unique map display. The route guidance is also said to be “far more precise” than anything available today.

The new navigation technology is the result of a collaboration with the Dutch geodata specialist Tom Tom. After starting in an electric model, it is to be extended to other vehicles. By 2030, around 40 million cars in the Group's markets should be on the road with cloud navigation. The new technology could be particularly useful for e-cars that require precise range calculations and intelligent charging stop planning.
