You should recognize him by the nose

BMW's mid-range coupe In the new edition, it emancipates itself more from the 3-series sedan and station wagon. The new self-confidence is noticeable at first glance.

The new generation of the BMW 4 Series stands out more than before from the more bourgeois 3 Series. This is visually emphasized by an extra large and newly designed kidney, technically a new six-cylinder engine. The launch of the Coupes takes place in October, later a convertible and a four-door hatchback sedan complete the portfolio.

Visually the new foursome much more independent than its predecessor, which was basically just a slightly pimped-up variant of the threesome. Now the four-seater has its own sheet metal cover - and above all a new front. It also offers a solution to the brand's long-standing kidney problem. While the iconic radiator grille has grown ugly in the past model innovations, it now spans vertically over the muzzle. According to BMW, the models were, among other things, the pre-war Coupé 328 and the 3.0 CSi from the 1970s. In the “Concept 2019 Series” study presented at the IAA 4, the new kidney grille design caused a lot of discussion, the series version looks more pleasing, but should nevertheless divide opinions.

The differences to the cheaper 3 Series should not only be noticeable visually, but also on the road. The Coupé therefore has a wider track on the rear axle and a center of gravity that has been lowered by two centimeters. In addition, there are independently tuned dampers, a torsion-resistant body and optimized aerodynamics. Optionally, the driving dynamics with sports brakes and rear axle differential lock can be increased further.

A new 3,0-liter six-cylinder petrol engine with 275 kW / 374 hp, which comes as the M440i xDrive always in combination with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive technology, is celebrating its premiere in the Munich middle class. Below the top engine are two 2,0 four-cylinder petrol engines with 135 kW / 184 PS and 190 kW / 258 PS, also with automatic transmission, but with rear-wheel instead of all-wheel drive. The diesel range initially consists of a 2,0-liter four-cylinder with 140 kW / 190 hp and optional all-wheel drive. In spring 2021, a 3,0-liter six-cylinder with 210 kW / 286 hp will be added to the range. The sporty M440d xDrive with 250 kW / 340 PS is currently starting the offer. All engines are combined with a 48-volt hybrid system.

In terms of equipment, the coupé will stand out slightly from the sedan and station wagon. Features include LED headlights, smartphone integration and three-zone automatic air conditioning. Laser light, a head-up display and autonomous driving functions are available on request. The prices should start at around 45.000 euros.
