Audi RS 5 Coupé - sporty Audi with V8 engine and 450 hp

The Audi RS 5 Coupé is powered by a high-revving naturally aspirated V8 engine that is very closely related to the V10 engine in the Audi R8. The RS 5 Coupé is the sporty high-flyer in the A5 family. It offers the drive power and driving dynamics of a sports car, packaged in an elegant coupé body. The 4.2 FSI of the RS 5 has an output of 331 kW (450 hp) and a maximum torque of 430 Nm.

The two-door car sprints to 4,6 km/h in just 100 seconds and further to an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. If desired, Audi only limits the top speed to 280 km/h. The snappy response, the greedy revving and the rich, robust sound identify the V8 as a thoroughbred sports engine. On average, the high-tech V8 consumes well below the values of its direct competitors. This is thanks to the use of technologies from Audi's modular efficiency platform, which also includes a recuperation system.

The standard seven-speed S tronic also contributes to efficiency with its high level of efficiency and the high gear ratio in the last gear. The driver can have the dual-clutch transmission, which shifts at lightning speed, operate automatically or control it himself, using the selector lever or paddles on the steering wheel. The integrated launch control program provides rocket-like starts by managing clutch engagement at mid-rpm.

Audi RS 5 Coupe

Like every RS model, the RS 5 Coupé puts its power onto the road with quattro permanent all-wheel drive. The crown gear center differential, its heart, is compact and light. It can vary the distribution of torque between the front and rear axles at lightning speed and over a wide range; if necessary, up to 70 percent flow forwards and a maximum of 85 percent backwards. The standard configuration is sporty and rear-biased at 40:60.

The chassis of the RS 5 Coupé brings together fast and precise steering, high cornering speeds and superior stability. Most of the components of the five-link front axle and the self-tracking trapezoidal link rear axle are made of aluminium. The power steering works electromechanically. It has a direct gear ratio, delivers sensitive road contact and can support you with slight interventions when braking on surfaces with different levels of grip. Since it does not consume any energy when driving straight ahead, it contributes to increased efficiency.

The tight setup lowers the body 20 millimeters compared to the Audi A5. Newly designed 19-inch forged aluminum wheels with 265/35 tires are part of the standard equipment; optionally, the high-performance coupé rolls on 20-inch wheels with 275/30 tires.

The brake system of the Audi RS 5 Coupé now works with large internally ventilated wave brake discs, the front ones have a diameter of 365 millimeters. The steel friction rings with their wave-shaped outer contour are perforated and connected to the aluminum brake pots via pins - this design reduces tension, quickly dissipates heat and prevents the transfer of temperature peaks. In addition, the newly designed shape of the friction rings leads to a weight saving of around three kilograms in total and thus improves the balance of unsprung masses.

Shiny black brake calipers on the RS 5

The brake calipers are painted high-gloss black, and eight pistons work at the front. Optionally, the RS 5 has discs made of carbon fiber ceramic on the front axle. The ESP stabilization system integrates a sport mode and can also be switched off completely.

On request, Audi also supplies a particularly dynamic damping technology – the sports suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control DRC. Two shock absorbers that are diagonally opposite each other are connected to each other via oil lines and a central valve. When cornering at high speed, the system intensifies the support of the front wheel on the outside of the corner. The sports suspension plus has variable damping characteristics that can be adjusted in three stages.

The Audi drive select driving dynamics system is standard in the RS 5 Coupé. It allows the driver to vary the characteristics of the steering, the seven-speed S tronic and the gas pedal in the three modes comfort, auto and dynamic. If an Audi MMI navigation system is on board, there is the additional mode individual, which the driver can compose himself. The sound of the exhaust system can also be modulated using Audi drive select; in the dynamic program, effective double-declutching bursts accompany the downshift.

RS 5 with single-frame grille in front of the V8 engine

The Audi RS 5 Coupé stands athletically on the road, its classically elegant two-door lines fascinate with sharp accents. The new single-frame grille, which is beveled at the upper corners, has a high-gloss anthracite-grey grille with a diamond structure and a frame with a matt aluminum look. The standard xenon plus headlights are framed by narrow strips of LED daytime running lights. The air flows in through large openings embedded in a distinctively designed bumper; he wears a splinter edge like a racing car. The bonnet was modeled more plastically with sharper edges; this makes the sporty two-door look even wider and flatter from the front.

The flared aluminum fenders at the front and the rear side panels with the sharp horizontal upper edges are reminiscent of two classic Audis from the 80s – the four-wheel drive pioneer Audi quattro and the Sport quattro. The side skirts have angular attachments; the trim strips and the housings of the exterior mirrors have a matt aluminum look.

At the rear, the two oval tailpipes of the exhaust system, which are integrated into the bumper, dominate. On request, Audi can supply a sports gas dispenser with a more voluminous sound; their tailpipes have black bezels. The LED rear lights are also presented with new continuous light strips. The large diffuser is drawn far up; the spoiler in the tailgate extends automatically at a speed of 120 km/h.

The underbody is clad over a large area and integrates air vents for the seven-speed S tronic and the front brakes. Thanks to the highly developed aerodynamics, the RS 5 Coupé generates downforce at high speed to improve stability.

Sports seats with integrated headrests are standard

The dimensions change slightly due to the dynamic look: The RS 5 Coupé is 23 millimeters longer and six millimeters wider than the A5 Coupé, but six millimeters lower. There are eight tones to choose from in the color fan, from uni, metallic and pearlescent finishes to specially pigmented crystal effect paints.

The line of dynamic elegance also characterizes the interior. Sports seats with integrated headrests are standard. They can be adjusted electrically and are covered with a combination of black leather and Alcantara. Alternatively, Audi offers seat covers in fine Nappa leather; optionally in black or in the new lunar silver, each discreetly accentuated with a rock-grey piping seam. Bucket seats with a folding backrest or comfortable air-conditioned comfort seats with a ventilation function are also available. The interior is black, with narrow chrome clasps on the switches and controls adding subtle accents. The inlays are made of carbon, brushed or etched aluminum, glossy piano finish or bright stainless steel mesh.

The new multifunction sports leather steering wheel with its thick rim is flattened at the bottom and impresses with its new, even simpler operating concept; the ignition key and the selector lever knob have also been revised. The pitman arms have also been updated. The instruments have black dials and white lettering with special scaling. When the ignition is switched on, the red pointers on the speedometer and rev counter quickly run to the stop and back again – a sporty sight. The door openers each consist of two filigree bars, a typical RS feature.

Lap timer for lap times

The driver information system with color display integrates an RS menu with a lap timer for recording lap times and an oil thermometer; on startup, it comes up with a special RS splash screen. In the instrument cluster, a panel with a piano finish encloses the instrument cluster. The pedals, the footrest and the buttons of the optional MMI navigation systems shine in aluminum look. Aluminum inserts adorn the door sills, RS 5 logos set accents.

In addition, Audi offers many exclusive features for the interior to choose from. A design package in carbon is available for the engine compartment, and styling packages in black or matt aluminum look for the body. A wide range of high-performance assistance and communication systems complements the range of optional equipment.

Among them are the adaptive cruise control, the Audi side assist, the adaptive light, the MMI navigation plus, the Bluetooth online car phone and the Bang & Olufsen sound system. Color palette for headlining, instrument panel, carpet and seats. In addition to the standard combination of pearl Nappa leather and Alcantara, the leather qualities Milano and Valcona are available for the upholstery.
