Auto travel speed in Europe

Despite different speed limits, the possible travel speed on Europe's highways is relatively balanced. However, the fastest way is in Germany.

On European highways, you can hardly drive faster than 100 km / h on average. On average, the actual travel speed is 95,6 km / h, as determined by the rental vehicle portals "CamperDays" and "billiger-mietwagen.de". The fastest way is among the large transit routes on the German A2 between Oberhausen and Kloster Lehnin, where an average of 101,5 km / h is possible. The slowest route is the E55 between Copenhagen and Brindisi at 86,2 km / h. Values in the range of the maximum speed, which is at least 120 km / h in Europe, are not achieved. The data was determined with the help of traffic information from Google Maps.

However, in many places it is advisable to tend to stay below the permitted maximum speed. For example in Italy, where the speed camera density is 1,17 devices per kilometer of the motorway, the highest in Europe. The absolute number of 8.146 is also the top value in the comparison. With a speed camera density of 0,3 per kilometer and 3.832 devices, Germany ranks second in both cases. Denmark brings up the rear when it comes to speed monitoring with 20 speed traps or 0,01 devices per kilometer.
