Driving in the sunshine - it is better to be careful than sunburn

Convertible drivers usually know about the dangers of the sun. But even users of closed-top cars should not be careless in the summer.

As soon as the first rays of sunshine venture out, you can see them again: convertibles with the roof open. Central and northern European drivers love the sun and use their vehicle to sunbathe. But fresh air tanning harbors dangers.

Especially after a wet and cold spring, when the weather is nice, numerous sun-hungry drivers are out and about. But one should not underestimate the radiance of the spring sun. Especially in open cars, you quickly lose the feeling for it due to the wind. The consequences are obvious: sunburn and sunstroke were faster than expected. Cabriolet drivers should therefore never go on a journey without appropriate skin protection using creams. Very important: the right headgear. This is achieved by a hat, scarf or cap. Especially drivers with sparse hair growth should pay attention to their scalp.

Anyone who believes that they are safe from the dangers of sunlight in a closed vehicle is not quite right. The windscreen shields all UV rays. However, the side windows and the rear window only absorb the aggressive UVB rays, the UVA radiation, on the other hand, is only slightly attenuated and can penetrate through the windows to a large extent unfiltered.

In order to protect yourself, arms and face should be rubbed with sun protection cream. Long-sleeved clothing made of light, breathable fabric also helps. In the back seat, occupants can be protected by special sun protection sails on the rear side windows. This is especially important in young children, whose skin is much more vulnerable.

The right visual aid is particularly important not only on long vacation trips by car. So that glaring light and reflections do not restrict the view, drivers need sunglasses of the right strength. Models with glasses tinted brown or gray are recommended. They least distort the color impression, so that the contrast of traffic lights, brake lights or signs works well. Trendy tint colors in yellow, green or red can make color detection more difficult. Of course, the glasses must not be too tinted.

Self-tinting lenses are only suitable to a limited extent, since the car windows already filter the UV radiation and thus prevent the lenses from automatically darkening. Drivers without poor eyesight and contact lens wearers can opt for a conventional model of sunglasses. Contact lens wearers should also wear sunglasses. This can also have a positive side effect: because drafts and air from the air conditioning system can cause contact lenses to dry out and irritate or tire the eyes.
