Autonomous driving - field test in London

The Swedish car manufacturer Volvo now wants to gain experience in Great Britain in how families can cope with the self-driving car in everyday life. In a field trial, 2017 families will be semi-autonomous from the beginning Volvos be around London on public roads. A year later, the practical test called "Drive me London" was expanded to include fully autonomous cars up to 100.

The manufacturer collects data from the private test persons in order to better adapt their vehicles to everyday conditions. There is also a “Drive me” project in the Swedish homeland of Gothenburg, in which families from 2017 drive with semi-autonomous Volvos. Another field trial is planned in a Chinese city.

For the Swedish manufacturer, autonomous driving is an integral part of the “Vision 2020” goal: Nobody should be seriously injured or killed in a new Volvo by the end of the decade. Since a large part of all accidents are due to driver errors or distractions, accident researchers worldwide hope that the number of accidents will be improved by autonomous vehicles. Because they are traveling more evenly, they should also have a positive impact on traffic flow and CO2 emissions.
