Builders must enable charging stations

When it comes to new buildings or renovations, builders will have to think about the requirements of the electric car in the future.

Electric car charging stations should become the standard in newly built buildings. The Building Electromobility Infrastructure Act (GEIG), which has now been passed by the Bundestag, stipulates that, under certain conditions, cable and charging infrastructure for electric vehicles must be provided in larger parking lots in residential and commercial buildings.

If residential buildings with more than five parking spaces are built or extensively renovated, each parking space must in future be equipped with protective tubes for electrical cables. In the case of new non-residential buildings, the obligation applies to more than six parking spaces. Then at least every third parking space must be equipped with a line infrastructure and a charging point must also be set up. In addition, a charging facility must be installed in existing non-residential buildings with more than 20 parking spaces from 2025. There are exceptions for small companies, among others.

The new law is just one of the building blocks that the federal government intends to use to promote the expansion of the e-car infrastructure. It was only on Wednesday that the cabinet decided to set up a fast charging network for electric cars. In addition, there has been a funding program for the installation of private charging stations since the end of 2020.
