Berlin scans parking offenders

The parking space guards of the Berlin regulatory office should no longer step on their feet in the future run flat. Instead, they will scan illegally parked cars from the car.

In Berlin, so-called “ScanCars” are to be used in the future to track down illegal parkers. Automated parking space monitoring is considered to be more efficient and cheaper than walking along the roadside in the classic way. According to a report by the "Tagesspiegel", the city hopes for 2.000 checks per day and vehicle used. A walking employee checks 200 to 300 parking spaces per day.

The technology, which is already common in other European countries, will first be tested in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and Mitte, with other districts to be added later. So far, however, there is still no legal basis, since automated license plate recognition is not yet permitted in Germany. The Berlin administration wants to campaign for a corresponding change in the road traffic regulations.

In practice, the system works as follows: In future, drivers will have to enter their license plate number when purchasing a parking ticket from a machine or using their mobile phone. This is then stored centrally. The vehicles of the public order office, which are equipped with a camera, compare the database with the number plates of the parked cars. Any fine notices will then be sent automatically.
