BMW 2002 tribute - fireworks in the rearview mirror

It was a longing model in the early 70 years, a compact sedan with racer qualities and one of the most important vehicles in the brand's history: the BMW 2002 turbo. The Munich-based company is now honoring the cheeky riot with the 2002 design study homage, which celebrates its premiere at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este.

The designers have paid homage to history fans, on the one hand, to bring tears of joy to their eyes, the Munich-based company has so authentically transferred the goosebumps model to modern times. On the other hand, they are likely to be wistful about the exclusive existence of the vehicle as a study.

The modern interpretation of the historical model begins with the compact proportions with long wheelbase, short overhangs and the pronounced shark nose, goes through aerodynamic details such as the large spoilers in the front and rear to the voluminous wheel arches. As with the 2002, two modern headlights on the modern successor also limit the concise front section to the outside.

With the 02 series, BMW was able to achieve success from 1966. In the middle of the oil crisis, the Munich-based 1973 presented the top model 2002 turbo - the first production vehicle with an exhaust gas turbocharger in Europe.

Although it is clear to see which historical vehicle cites the homage model, the designers understood the temptation to drift off into retro kitsch

Based on the characteristic all-round chrome band of the 02 series, a carbon band divides the body optically at shoulder level. Above that, the study, like previous racing cars, has a matt finish to avoid reflections from sunlight, while the light metallic blue shines in the lower area. Of course, an important quotation should not be missing: Inside the front apron, the "turbo" lettering in mirror writing reminds us of the 2002 turbo at that time - made for the rear-view mirrors of those driving in front and therefore quite controversial at the time.

Although it is clear which historical vehicle the homage model is citing, the designers understood the temptation to drift off into retro kitsch. You can also see similarities to today's BMW models, such as the M2 Coupé or i8. (Hanne Schweitzer / SP-X)
