Currywurst-Aus: Wolfsburg is becoming more vegetarian

The Currywurst is a symbol for honest work and a proletarian culture of pleasure. VW is now removing them from the menu in favor of bowls and curries. At least a bit.

Volkswagen is not only changing the model range, but also the menu. In the so-called brand high-rise at the Wolfsburg parent plant, the traditional currywurst flies from the menu in the company restaurant after the summer break. The reason is the switch to vegetarian dishes. “The gastronomy and catering team at Volkswagen Service Factory has developed around 150 new recipes, and all of them get by without meat. The only exception: every now and then, dishes with fish are also part of the menu, ”a statement said. In the future, employees will be able to choose from among other things vegetable bowls, curries and pasta dishes.

Traditional currywurst

At VW, the currywurst is more than pork, bacon and curing salt in natural casings, it is definitely a political issue. When the exotic snack was only to appear on the menu of the workers' canteen once a week at the end of 2020, the works council even intervened and prevented sausage rationing. Two years earlier there had been a bit of an uproar just because the chef had changed the ketchup recipe. But the meat farce roasted in the skin is not only popular with the workforce, but also with all visitors to the group - right down to the customers who pick up their new car with it before they start their journey. The demand is so great that VW produces the sausages itself in its own slaughterhouse.

The popular and unhealthy food is also a symbol of a change in corporate culture. Proponents of the current group course could see the avoidance of meat as evidence of the group's more sustainable orientation. Critics may complain that another dear tradition is being sacrificed on the altar of a fashionable woke culture. However: at least until further notice, the currywurst is still available in the other VW refreshment points. For example in the company restaurant across the street. If that is too far for you, you will also find a meat-free version in the future, with which CEO Herbert Diess is now promoting the company's new culinary course on LinkedIn. “The food is getting better and better, the employees can look forward to delicious and healthy meals!” Said the highest-ranking VW manager.
