The BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 – motorcycle of the future

According to BMW's design study, this is what the motorcycle of the future will look like. The BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 is intended to embody the BMW brand's understanding of motorcycling in a networked world. Designed as a symbol for the ultimate driving experience, the driver, who is out and about without a helmet or protective clothing, feels nature, the wind, acceleration and centrifugal forces up close.

The shape of the black triangular frame of the BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 deliberately cites the first BMW motorcycle – the R32 from 1923 – but reinterprets it as a functional sculpture. A flexible frame that adapts to the speed should allow steering without the usual joints.

The drive is located in the middle of the motorcycle. It is a style element and a historical reminiscence at the same time: in shape and design it is reminiscent of the traditional BMW boxer engine, but houses the zero-emission drive unit. The outer shape of the “boxer” changes depending on the driving situation. At rest it fits snugly. As soon as the journey begins, the engine block moves out to the side.

Always in balance, even when standing

Using “Self Balancing”, the VISION NEXT bike balances itself. It stays stationary on its own, without the need for a motorcycle stand. It is practically impossible to fall over. The assistance systems give the driver additional safety while driving.

A pair of glasses as an information unit

The main part of the exchange of information between the driver and the vehicle takes place via the visor, data glasses that enclose the field of vision and have a wind protection function. The visor projects situationally relevant data directly into the driver's field of vision.

Sensors in the driver's equipment monitor data such as pulse and body temperature so that the suit can regulate the air conditioning accordingly if it feels cold or stressed. With vibrating elements on the arms and legs, the clothing gives instructions for navigation or shows when you have reached your limit when leaning. In this way, driver and machine become a functional unit, making the driving experience even more intense.

“The BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 combines the best of the digital and analog worlds. It offers the maximum, emotional experience,” says Edgar Heinrich, responsible for BMW Motorrad Design.

So it remains to be seen to what extent this vision of a motorcycle will eventually find itself on the streets. What is certain is that many things from BMW's vision will flow into the development of future motorcycles.
