"Fuel"

Low compression, but charged by two turbochargers and brought to full charge. The Skyactiv-D 150 in our endurance tester is a real piece of engine. But sometimes the theory is abundantly gray.

For example, when it's really rushing. Because if the freeway is really free, which fortunately still happens often enough, then the red 3er runs really well. In sixth gear, which is wonderfully well translated - not too long to starve on the mountain and not too short to give away the torque - quickly set 200 km / h cruising speed. It will take a while to get to the 215 display on the head-up display, but it will then remain with great pleasure.

Whether for a short sprint, or even for half an hour at a time: the notebook in the glove compartment notes in fact such a trip, in the morning, direction Eisenach, completely free, 128 km without loosening. The Mazda is great fun, not least because it still offers more than compact-class comfort, even at high speeds. At the gas station but that has its price: he wants then just once 8.3 liter / 100km.

Of course, that's not very much, the competition with 2.0 TDI, 20d and 220 CDI does not make it any better. Rarely have we been really clearly in the 6, x liter range lately. Most of the seven is in the notebook in front.

Maybe that's also because of our travel speed lately. 🙂

Gorgeous peace

Where many competitors, even from much more expensive vehicle categories, still nail and rattle today after starting the engine like the old van from heating engineer Schulz here in the village, the Mazda 3 simply rules: rest.

Although surprisingly the cold start boost at the beginning, because well 2000 idle revolutions are rather untypical for a diesel, but so the whole Skyactiv-D engine is also somewhat untypical. When driving, it is completely in the background. Whisper Diesel - it would really fit here as an attribute, if it had not been used by another manufacturer.

The calm also has another positive side effect: listening to music and relaxing.

The seats are comfortable, the extra charge leather very pleasant and haptic really great, as well as the steering wheel, which really touches very high quality, it is really fun in the red endurance tester to sink. Then there is a nice playlist from the Bose-Sounsystem and the work is over, even if it is still 500km away.

Small side note: Infotainment is no longer up to date. Both graphically, but also in the operating structure. CarPlay, Android Auto or other link protocols also does not support the Mazda 3. On the other hand, controlling the smartphone's music collection works great with the multifunction steering wheel when the iPhone connects to the car by cable.

glide

His body control is really excellent, nice stable, little jiggling. Even if you like a donkey with brake or accelerator in the curve vertex herumhantierst. Whether this is now, as Habby constantly pregnant with meaning, at the G-Vectoring Control is: mhmm? Or rather on a solid suspension tuning!

We do not believe that in the speed ranges that we drive every day, that motor drag torque has to be regulated and a wheel-selective braking of the inside wheels has to be tackled. Although we are fast on the road with our Mazda 3, but not always on the last physics groove.

What has really crystallized after a good half year: the weight. Not that of the car and certainly not the driver, but rather of steering and circuit. It is really fine and accurately balanced. Nothing sinks in the electrical support fog, nothing remains unclear. The steering wheel turns with great precision without blurring, the shifter cuts loose into the alley, is neither too short nor too long. Same for the brake: the big toe can not trigger full braking, nor do you have to stand on the pedal like an ox.

It's all very satisfying. In a way that will not overwhelm you with joy if you take the keys from 3er, but you're always kind of satisfied. You can enjoy it. It's just good.

The Mazda 3 is not an extreme car, in any dimension. But he is a very good car for those who appreciate the fineness of driving.

How was it in advertising in the past? And he runs, and runs, and runs, and runs ...

That's exactly what our endurance test candidate from Mazda does. The 150 PS Diesel conjures a new smile every day in the face of the test driver. Rotational joy and running culture are extremely positive, especially in comparison with the competition. In the 150 PS class, there should currently be no turbo diesel, which combines more revving with such good running culture and power.

With a mixed consumption of currently 6.8 liters, our Mazda3 is also a particularly efficient travel vehicle there. The usual speeds on long distances are well above 130 km / h. That just a compact thus turns out to be an ideal long-distance vehicle, who would have thought that before the test?

Problems: To date - absolutely none.

Every week we test new cars on mein-auto-blog. Every week we drive new models. As a skilled mechanic and merchant, Habby, the my-auto-blog founder, always looking for the advantages and disadvantages of the vehicles being driven. But: We - Habby - know that you're not always fair to a car. Because often the period in which you can test the car is simply too short. The insights that you get as a car buyer when you drive a car for a long time, that you get used to "strange things", are often missing from us. So the endurance tests are really awesome for us. Mein-auto-blog has been driving a Mitsubishi Plug-in Hybrid Outlander for over 30 months, and dozens of topics related to this innovative vehicle have emerged. Now the “first PHEV SUV in the world” has left us and a new candidate enriches everyday life. A classic diesel. Why? And why not an SUV? And why not a Volkswagen Golf, and why, why and why. These topics and much more, now in the long-term test blog for MAZDA3 Skyactiv-D 150 - here, in this article!

In the endurance test: Mazda3

Tested in everyday life

Endurance test started: April 18, 2017 - Mileage: 4.732

Our long-term test vehicle in detail

For the diesel variant of the Mazda3 we have deliberately decided. Because in order to achieve a planned mileage of around 60.000 kilometers in just 12 months, the Mazda3 has to be on the road a lot. And for frequent travelers, the diesel, in all discussions, is still the right choice.

Test car price

The Mazda3 comes to the test with the 2.2 liter 150 hp diesel engine. The mechanical six-speed manual gearbox promises crisp gear changes and leaves us in control of the speed level and thus the upper hand when it comes to consumption. Our long-term tester came to us as an extremely well-equipped “Sports Line”. The only selectable equipment options were also chosen for us by Mazda. This includes the Mazda SD navigation system, the technology package with full LED light, additional assistance systems and white leather interior.

The only right color? 🙂 Of course the “ruby red metallic”. Our long-term tester also stands on the 18-inch rims, which are covered with Dunlop tires in size 215 / 45-18. For our configuration, the price list ends up being € 32.880 - with Mazda deducting a € 2.500 bonus directly on new cars and thus € 30.380 would be the correct “list price” for our long-term tester.

First impression

The Mazda3 reacts sensitively to coarse wraps and parries even small outbreaks of frost with particular commitment. In doing so, he builds up this feeling of solidity and comfort, which is often confused with “bourgeois boredom”. The new dampers and an adapted stabilizer on the front axle spray the harmony that one is looking for in this segment. As I said, he remains a willing comrade for the next bend in spite of his comfort. G-Vectoring Control is also called a dynamics assistant, the greatest advantage of which is that you go unnoticed. This system provides engine torque control for increased agility and yet more comfort when driving. Targeted interventions in the engine management ensure an adaptation of the Mazda3's self-steering behavior. Less shaking of the steering wheel when driving straight ahead, more fun and willingness to turn into bends. As I said, the driver does not feel anything from the work of the GVC, the result is active and comfortable driving behavior. The Mazda3 is fed up on the road. Willingly gives in, bounces gently and firmly and otherwise behaves just like a model student at the teachers' conference.

The first 8.000 kilometers

Everything is possible between 4.7 and 8.5 liters. The Mazda3 got used to the long haul with us in the first days and is a surprisingly adult car. His Skyactiv diesel with two loaders and 150 PS is a real Leisetreter and very smooth, despite his strong start. That just a compact Japanese on the long way can shine so. We did not expect it!
