The diesel scandal: Does the diesel still pay?

Didn't we always love driving diesel? You didn't even have to be a frequent driver to like the diesel. Of course, a subsidized price per liter has always been attractive. Plus the combined torque of the turbo-diesel engines. And with direct injection, something like “driving pleasure” was added. For large cars, off-road vehicles and frequent drivers, diesel, together with an automatic transmission, was always the first choice. Will it stay that way after #Dieselgate?

Who is the diesel worth for?

Whether the diesel will still pay off in the future will also depend on the outcome of the VW affair. How the diesel will be accepted in the future could largely depend on Volkswagen and the way in which the group proceeds. NOx values, exhaust gases, fine dust - all important topics for the future. Diesel is the most efficient user of fossil fuels. CNG, LPG and above all gasoline do not come close to the efficiency of the diesel engine. So, despite the scandal, will the diesel engine remain the most important engine for people who travel a lot?

The diesel fuel is currently subsidized in the form of a lower energy and eco tax - that's why a liter of diesel currently costs around € 1.11 and a liter of gasoline currently € 1.30. It is not clear whether these subsidies will continue in the future - as of today, mein-auto-blog has compared three popular cars among us Germans! When does the diesel pay off?

 my-car-blog | Cost comparison

The first in comparison: Germany's top seller, the VW Golf. As a basis for the comparison, we assume a petrol price of 1.30 €, a diesel price of 1.11 € and an annual mileage of 15.000 €.

Golf 1.4 TSI

The four-cylinder turbo engine of the 125 TSI BMT Highline delivers 1.4 PS. The turbo petrol engine accelerates from zero to 100 km / h in 9.1 seconds. Its standard consumption: 5.2 liters per 100 km.

Golf 2.0 TDI

The four-cylinder turbo engine of the 150 TDI BMT Highline has an output of 2.0 hp. The turbo diesel accelerates from zero to 100 km / h in 8.6 seconds. Its standard consumption 4.1 liters per 100 km.

e-Golf

The electric golf costs 34.900 € to buy and provides 115 PS. His 270 Nm are immediately available. The driving pleasure of the e-Golf is high (driving report). VW specifies the e-Golf with 12.7 kWh per 100 km, based on the electricity mix in Germany, this results in CO2 emissions of 72 grams of CO2 per kilometer. The Diesel Golf is given as 106 g / km.

comparison diesel petrol volkswagen golf

The gasoline engine costs 7.232 € per year. The diesel is € 7.480 higher. Although the diesel with 615 liters of diesel requires significantly less fuel per year than the petrol engine with 780 liters, diesel consumption alone cannot compensate for the diesel surcharge. In terms of emissions, the diesel also saves around 210 kg of CO2 a year. The driving pleasure should also be on the side of the diesel due to the significantly higher torque.

This means that the diesel is not worthwhile with these factors, but offers higher torque and more power. The winner on the cost side? The petrol engine. On the emissions side? The diesel.

The electric drive as option number three!

Even if the e-Golf has significantly lower electricity costs than the fuel costs of the diesel (€ 533 vs. € 738), the workshop and tire costs are significantly lower and the fixed costs such as tax and insurance are below the diesel - the massive surcharge alone and the currently very high loss in value make the e-Golf lose in comparison to the diesel Golf.

Here, however, one should take into account the still uncertain outcome of “#dieselgate” – currently no one can foresee whether the diesel engine’s value stability will continue.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

The C-Class as a T-model from Mercedes-Benz is particularly popular with company and company car drivers. We compare the 136 hp C200d with the 156 hp C180. The diesel is almost €5.000 more expensive than the petrol engine, and the diesel also offers more torque while the petrol engine offers more power. With an annual mileage of 20.000 km and a useful life of three years, the result is a practical “DRAW”.

For the launch, Ford offers two gasoline, two diesel and a hybrid.

Ford Mondeo

The classic station wagon for the representative? A Ford Mondeo tournament. We compare the 150 PS strong diesel with the 160 PS strong gasoline. The diesel can shine with a torque of 320 Nm. At the same time, the base price is only 2.800 € higher than the petrol engine. For the classic representative station wagon, we have increased the annual mileage to 40.000 km.

The diesel wins with a narrow lead of 485 € per year. However, the diesel saves 2 kilograms per year in CO1.000 emissions!

Škoda Octavia RS

184 PS for diesel, 220 PS for gasoline. In both cases, the sporty RS variant of the Octavia has it under the hood. In addition, both models differ in the base price only by 800 €! The turbo petrol engine is more fun to drive, as the pure acceleration values say (6.9 to 8.2 for diesel (0-100)). Calculated over three years and a total of 75.000 km, the diesel saves around 800 € in costs and also emits 625 kilograms less CO2.

The advantage of the diesel is manageable

The advantages of the diesel are also rather manageable on the cost side, as long as there are no maximum annual mileage. For many car buyers, the appeal of the diesel lies more in its torque plus and relaxed performance characteristics. The diesel scandal may also give us the chance to rethink our own considerations and preferences.

For those who are not often on the road, the electric drive could be an alternative! However, the example of the VW Golf shows that the biggest hurdle here is the large surcharge for the purchase.
