The new HONDA Civic Tourer

The new combi version of the Honda Civic Tourer will be presented at the IAA. So there is finally a combi version of the compact Civic. In this class, a combination model is essential for the German market. And not only that, the new 1.6 i-DTEC 125 PS Diesel is also offered in this station wagon. With this, HONDA presents one of the most important vehicles at the IAA.

Germany, united as a combined country. And with the new CIVIC Tourer, Honda will regain lost market shares in Germany, I'm sure!

Honda gives the first facts about the new Civic Tourer

The Civic Tourer celebrates its world premiere at the International Motor Show in September in Frankfurt. In advance, Honda announced the first facts about the compact combination developed under the leadership of the European research and development team. Despite its slim, sporty silhouette, it will have the largest trunk in its class: 624 liters * hold the storage space behind the rear seats (loading up to the trunk cover). 1.668 liters * are available when the seats are folded down and loaded up to the roof.

The engines available are the 1.6 i-DTEC diesel engine with manual transmission from the "Earth Dreams Technology" series or the 1.8 i-VTEC petrol engine, which is available with both manual and automatic transmissions. The new rear adaptive damper system (ADS), which is used for the first time in the Civic Tourer, ensures maximum stability and comfort even with different payloads or driving conditions.

The new Civic Tourer is produced at the Honda plant in Swindon (United Kingdom). At the beginning of 2014 he rolls to the European dealers.

Functionality and form: uncompromising in design and space

“I am very proud of the sporty, slim and dynamic exterior of the Civic Tourer, which virtually hides the true functionality and variability of the vehicle. To get real value from a compact car, you have to think about how best to design the space in the interior. Of course, this also has an effect on the design. But thanks to the Civic's clever platform, we had the opportunity to optimize the overall package. The result is a vehicle that almost has the silhouette of a sports car. For me, the strength lies in the synergy of functionality, variability and dynamic expression, ”explains Adrian Killham, Head of Development at the Civic Tourer.

The exterior design of the Civic Tourer is sporty and elegant. Its unmistakable look is primarily defined by a very distinctive side line that runs from the A to the D pillar and thus gives the impression of a 'floating roof'. This was the area in which the designers focused: the rear side window was made larger and the C and D pillars were slim. In contrast to the Civic five-door, the Civic Tourer's window line on the rear doors has been raised by 17 mm to underline the dynamic exterior design.

Even at first glance, it is clear that the Civic Tourer differs significantly from other combinations, "says Killham. "The recently launched vehicles all follow a similar style. The Civic Tourer has its own style. "

The variability and functionality that hides behind the sporty and elegant appearance is second to none. The reason is not least the layout with centrally placed tank, from which the Civic five-door also benefits. The tank is located under the front seats. This leads to an unparalleled size of the interior and at the same time provides space for the unique Honda 'Magic Seats'.

With its interior dimensions, the Civic Tourer leaves both C and D segment vehicles behind. Under the load compartment blind, the luggage compartment offers 624 liters * - that is a new class value. If the cover is not required, it can be stowed in a specially created compartment to save space. Another highlight is the double loading floor in the trunk, which can be lowered for the transport of tall objects, among other things. In addition, the loading sill is 137 mm lower than that of the Civic five-door. This makes loading the Civic Tourer particularly convenient and easy overall.

The Civic Tourer is made even more practical and spacious by the unique Honda 'Magic Seats'. They allow numerous seating configurations and thus maximum variability. The rear seats can be folded over with just one hand and then open up a completely flat surface, which was achieved not least by slightly increasing the entire loading floor compared to the Civic five-door hatchback.

But the rear seats can do even more: The seats can be folded upwards like in a movie theater. Then there is practical loading space for tall objects right behind the front seats. The rear bench seat, divided in the 60: 40 ratio, offers many other options to offer passengers and luggage the space they need, and can also be used as an alternative access to the cargo area.

Performance: Advanced and efficient technology

The Civic Tourer uses either the 1.6 i-DTEC diesel engine with manual transmission or the 1.8 i-VTEC petrol engine, which is available with both manual and automatic gearboxes. The 1.6 i-DTEC engine, which was first used in the Civic five-door and then in the compact SUV Honda CR-V, is the first representative of the "Earth Dreams Technology" series in Europe. With this new generation of engines and drives, Honda offers an excellent balance between driving performance and efficiency. The Civic Tourer underlines this claim in a special way.

The 1.6 i-DTEC engine consists of an aluminum cylinder head that is connected to an open-deck aluminum block. He is the lightest diesel engine in its class. The main goal of the Honda engineers was to bring mechanical friction to the level of a petrol engine. To achieve this, all moving parts have been carefully optimized. The result is a vehicle that is economical, but at the same time offers plenty of driving pleasure: the new Civic Tourer.

The new 1.6 i-DTEC diesel engine was specially developed for the European market. It is produced - as well as the Civic Tourer - in the European Honda factory in Swindon (United Kingdom).

Adaptive damper system (ADS)

The Civic Tourer is the first production vehicle to use the new rear adaptive damper system ADS. The driver can choose between the three modes COMFORT, NORMAL and DYNAMIC. All are designed to provide the highest level of stability and comfort, even with different payloads or driving conditions. This makes the Civic Tourer a comfortable travel vehicle or an agile 'turncoat', depending on your needs.

"By bringing the system into a new format, we are enabling many customers to experience the benefits of this advanced technology," said Development Manager Adrian Killham.

Safety

As with all Honda vehicles, the engineers at Civic Tourer focused on safety during development. The compact combination will have various active driver assistance systems. Details do not call Honda yet. The aim is, however, to offer a high standard in driver, occupant and pedestrian protection.
