E-fuels development platform

ohne electricity-based fuels the decarbonization of transport will be difficult. The federal government now wants to accelerate the development. First, with a small step.

E-fuels take another step towards market ramp-up. That Federal Ministry of Transport has now started the call for funding for a development platform for electricity-based liquid fuels (PtL). The semi-industrial plant with a production capacity of up to 10.000 tons per year is intended to be used for research and demonstration purposes. The focus is on the supply of air and shipping traffic.

Why do you make development platforms?

The funding of the PtL development platform is part of an overall funding concept for renewable fuels, which provides a total of 2021 billion euros in funding for the period 2024-1,54. Further steps include the promotion of industrial production and investment in further research.

PtL fuels or e-fuels are a climate-neutral substitute for mineral oil fuel - be it gasoline, diesel or kerosene. Large amounts of green electricity are required for production, which means that production competes with e-mobility. The use of synthetic fuels in cars is therefore initially considered to be of secondary importance. Instead, they should be used to supply modes of transport for which e-mobility is not an option.

Corona also has an impact on the use of transport. Not entirely surprisingly, one thing in particular has been affected by the pandemic...
