Electric cars are increasing by 200%

While the overall market shrank, new e-car registrations exploded. Their share of the stock has also grown significantly.

E-mobility seems to have made a breakthrough in Germany. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), 2020 electrically powered cars were registered throughout Germany in 394.950, 206 percent more than in the previous year. The overall market has shrunk by around 20 percent in the same period.

The KBA puts the market share of e-mobiles including plug-in hybrids and hydrogen cars at 13,5 percent. There were particularly high rates in Schleswig-Holstein, Berlin and Baden-Württemberg at over 16 percent. Every third newly registered pure electric car was a small car, with the compact and SUV classes accounting for 20 percent each.

VW achieved the highest market share for all e-models with 17 percent, followed by Mercedes with 15 percent and Audi with 9 percent. Of the total of 194.163 purely battery-electric cars, the largest share of new registrations, at 24 percent, was also from the VW brand, followed by Renault with 16 percent and Tesla with almost 9 percent.

The proportion of vehicles with alternative drives in the total number of cars rose in the course of the past year from 2,4 percent to 3,6 percent (+54,0 percent). In the case of cars with electric drive, the development was even more pronounced with a plus of 147 percent - there the share of the total stock rose from 0,5 percent to 1,2 percent.
