Europe depends on China for electric cars

Europe leaves China behind in terms of e-car sales. At least if you interpret the term rather broadly.

Europe is likely to become the world market leader in electric cars for the first time this year. According to figures from the Center Automotive Research (CAR), 2020 all-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids were sold in the EU and the United Kingdom in the first nine months of 768.910. China had 662.000 vehicles in the same period. A backlog that the experts believe it will not be possible to catch up. The US ranks third with an estimated 345.000 sales in the first nine months of the year.

If you look at the sales of all-electric cars alone, China continues to lead. In the Middle Kingdom, 511.000 e-models were registered in the first three quarters, in Europe there were 418.140. For the plug-in hybrids, the ratio is 151.000 to 350.770, which is an advantage for Europe. In total, 17,1 million cars were registered in China, almost twice as many vehicles as in Europe.
