Exclusive - First ride: Alfa Romeo Giulia 2.0 Turbo

My-auto-blog was the only car in the German-speaking market that had the opportunity to drive not only the diesel engine but also the gasoline variant of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Probe. How does the turbo engine fit the new Italian?

The 147 kW / 200 PS turbocharged engine will enrich the model range later in the year 2016. In contrast to the diesel brothers, the petrol engine with the excellent eight-speed automatic is positively coupled.

Giulia 2.0 Turbo. An unusually simple model name. An indication of the character of the car? Clear answer: Yes! Anyone who had hoped for a gloriously fumbling boxer sound in front of sheer classic quotations such as the series designation and the tinkered concept of the standard drive, just as he himself made a base 145er covetable, has to rethink.

Beautiful new world: The only gasoline option of the Giulia, this side of the Quadrifoglio monster, serves home-style cooking. The key data of the engine read even brittle. Two liters of displacement, four cylinders in series, of course with turbocharging.

Objectively there is little to complain about the two-liter engine in the Giulia. Of course, there is enough power for everyday driving. Unlike the diesel, this Giulia is design-friendly revving, also the car looks fleet-footed.

Now it comes, the BUT: The sound of the turbo engine is thin and this Alfa Romeo not worthy. It is certainly due to high expectations for a bit more fun in the Italian. The simply nonexistent sound design surprises us then. Just as much as it comes as a surprise that you already notice the lack of such a frippery today.

On the first short exit I was able to drive the Giulia 2.0 Turbo on country roads and through towns. Here, too, this model gives a nice performance. The successful suspension tuning and the adjustable parameters for drive and steering via the DNA regulator on the center console also intensify the relationship between car and driver. Subjectively, the gasoline engine is not better in the feed than the 180 PS diesel. The pulls with its higher torque (450 Nm to 330 Nm when gasoline) better from all walks of life and is not noticeably slower, according to the data sheet. Both variants run 230 km / h top, the gasoline engine has reached one hundred tempo after 6,6 seconds. The diesel only needs 0,2 seconds more.

How and whether the petrol engine can accelerate when accelerating from higher motorway speeds, could not be tried at the first contact in Italy speed-limited. But now it is already clear that it sounds out of the engine room. A sound that does not put the Alfa away from any competitors in Europe and Asia. And therefore not worthy of a car in which so many emotions were processed.

The same can of course be said about the diesel engine. There you have cobbled together before the ride but no other expectations. And that's the problem that can spoil your mood with the 2.0 Turbo: As an offer for low-moving private customers, the 95 Octan-Alfa must sound more emotional, less synthetic to hang on the gas, more analog fun device than digital Fahrdings. If the Giulia not the reincarnation of a traditional brand, but simply another middle-class car, there would be little to moan. Which makes the two-liter interesting for markets like China. Where the diesel engine hardly plays a role and brand history does not matter, the car will go its own way in exactly that configuration.

In the old world but is not a middle-class model from Ingolstadt, Munich or Stuttgart, the worst adversary of the 2.0 Turbo, but the 20 PS weaker diesel in the same stall. Which should not be a problem for the brand. And certainly not for the customer. Because that he can buy a decent car with the diesel, you will learn here.

DSC01050 (2)Whether at least the financial offer for the petrol engine speaks, can not be calculated yet. For this model are still no information on the price and the insurance classifications. The on-board computer spits out 9,5 liters of 100 km consumption during the test drive, at least 2,8 liters above the display value in the diesel.

And finally ...

I would not have dreamed it, but my final sentence is: If Giulia, then Diesel! Unless you forget the extra sharp Quadrifoglio. But this is another story…
