Driving report: BMW X2 M35i - The power pack

Coupés have always been allowed to be a little more expensive and also a little more powerful. This also applies if they are based on an SUV. BMW is therefore upgrading the X2 to the M model.

BMW puts on the X2 in a particularly powerful variant

BMW is heavily adding to the compact SUV coupe X2. The new top model is called the BMW X2 M35i and delivers an impressive 225 kW / 306 hp. The surprise is under the hood, because BMW's in-house tuners, BMW M GmbH, are installing an M-Performance four-cylinder in a BMW for the first time. There is also a superlative, because the two-liter turbo engine is the most powerful four-cylinder that is ever used in a street-legal BMW. The X2 power pack can be ordered now and costs from 55.200 euros.

The standard sprint from a standing start to 4,9 km / h succeeds in 100 seconds, and the top speed is electronically limited to 250 km / h. That would not be possible with the front-wheel drive of the X2 base, which is why the 1,7-tonner is only delivered as an all-wheel drive and with an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission including launch control as standard. The cooling system was specially revised for the M35i so that the thermal stability of the engine is also guaranteed. Not only motorsport fans will enjoy another M-Performance premiere: the mechanical sports differential mounted in the gearbox on the front axle. With a very sporty driving style, this system reduces the loss of traction on the front wheels. And the sports steering gives a nice feedback, even when driving fast country road curves a safe steering feeling is conveyed.

The special feature of the Power-X2 can already be seen from the outside. The sports suspension was lowered by one centimeter with tight springs. The large air intakes have been modified to increase performance and the BMW double kidney grille is extra wide here, the frame is painted in matt Cerium Gray. This noble-looking color can also be found on the cooling air openings and the exterior mirrors. The rear spoiler has turned out to be so powerful that the rear window only has a slot-like effect, but surprisingly the rear view of the mirror is not particularly restricted. The matched sports sound comes from two round 10 cm tailpipes of the sports exhaust system.

In the interior, the first thing that catches the eye is the racing front seats with integrated headrests. They offer above-average lateral support. A sporty, elegant mix of leather and Alcantara rounds off the high-performance overall package. If you opt for the optional seat belts with colored seams, you have to take into account an additional 300 euros.

It goes without saying that such a sporty SUV coupé is also moved with a lot of driving pleasure. The factory-specified consumption of around seven liters of super per 100 kilometers is then easily exceeded. But here, too, the Bavarians thought along and increased the tank volume from 51 to 61 liters.
