Driving report: Hyundai i30 N-Line - looks sporty

A certain sportive fate is enjoying increasing popularity among customers of almost all manufacturers. High performance is not necessarily needed. Hyundai calls his sports equipment simply N-Line.

The fact that Hyundai has long offered the i30 as a sharp N version with almost 300 PS, has gotten around, but does not help with a tighter budget. There are now the N-Line versions, for example, for the compact class model i30 at a surcharge of 1.900 to 3.500 Euro to the respective basic equipment. It is associated with amenities such as parking aid and lumbar support, but above all with the coveted sports look: 17 Zöller in sporty look, black headliner, racy diffuser, aluminum pedals and sports steering wheel in conjunction with the N-Line always at the start. We drove the i30 N with 1,4 liter large direct injection and gentle turbo pressure. The engine generates 103 kW / 140 and 242 Nm torque from 1.500 revolutions. The consumption is quoted by the manufacturer with 5,9 liters Super per 100 km.

There is no lack of performance

This version rolls in combination with manual six-speed gearbox for a base price of 24.650 Euro from the dealer's yard. There is no lack of performance, even if the four-cylinder can not compete with the real N version (the "N" stands for Nürburgring, among others). However, if you turn the 1,4-liter a bit, you will experience quite a deep draft. The progress is accompanied by a moderately-modeled key from cautious to toxic depending on the number of touring - after all, promises the N-Line and a discreet sharpened exhaust system.

A look at the data confirms the experience. For the standard Sprint the manufacturer calls sporty 8,9 up to 9,1 seconds depending on the body. Also beautiful is the manual transmission, whose six translations precisely and rest in a short time. Load change jerk when engaging the front-wheel drive compact does not know, smooth, smooth driving is here a light finger exercise. The geared to dynamic driving chassis is well balanced on the small test round. Although this i30 tends to be taut, but not uncomfortable - the overall picture is harmonious.

Anyone who orders the i30 without having to put additional check marks on the equipment list, gets a car with manually controlled air conditioning and must start the car with the ignition key. For the optional integrated Navi should grab those who use the system more often, because the touch screen is really fast, and you do not need an Internet connection to retrieve a pilot guidance. This is always required for smartphone integration. In terms of driver assistance, the buyer may again upgrade against 620 Euro: with autonomous emergency braking plus pedestrian detection plus knee airbag. There is little overall exposure. Maybe here and there a bit more TFT display for digital freaks, but there still has to be room for a facelift.
