Driving Report Isuzu D-MAX

In other parts of the world, pick-ups are a part of everyday life. In the United States, it is practically impossible to imagine life without them. This probably comes from the fact that a modern pick-up still reminds a little of the covered wagons of the Wild West times and the settlement of the North American West. As with the covered wagons, the horses are housed in the front and there is a large loading area at the back for your own belongings. So far so practical. With us, however, pick-ups lead a niche life - similar to the manufacturer ISUZU. It is fitting that the only vehicle of the ISUZU brand for the German market is, of all things, a pick-up.

He packs something away

Even if it is painted white in an innocent white, the Isuzu D-Max in the double-cap version with a hardtop for the cargo area remains an eye-catcher. Especially because of its size. With 5.29 meters, he plays in the league of VW Amarok and especially wants to appeal to tradespeople and people with more space requirements. The second generation of the D-Max was given a less conspicuous front, the headlights now nestle more in the front instead of standing conspicuously upright. In the premium version, the radiator grille is given a large load of chrome and the windows from row two are tinted dark. Isuzu offers some useful options, especially for buyers who are looking for a real utility vehicle. Among other things, the Isuzu D-Max is available as “Cab & Chassis only” - in other words, the customer gets the ladder frame and the driver's cab, what he then puts in place of the loading platform is up to him. So there is, among other things, the possibility of the Isuzu as "Kipper" to use.

For me to “test” it was the civilian variant as one can also use it as a dog owner or hobby farmer. Thanks to the “premium equipment”, my modern covered wagon was equipped with cruise control, air conditioning and many other goodies. Particularly practical: the hardtop from ISUZU comes with an extensive and padded load compartment cover. The bare sheet metal of the loading area disappears under a padded and rubberized protection.

labor input

Simple shopping trips make the D-Max hopelessly over the highway hoppeln. The chassis with rigid axle on the rear axle looks well-balanced, but looks for the challenges of heavy terrain or at least a heavy load on the truck bed.

Modernized interior

The premium equipment brings understated luxury into the work cabin of the D-Max. The seats are covered with leather and the driver's seat is even electrically adjustable. The cockpit exudes a sober black plastic mood, but is spared the sheer dreariness of other tools thanks to the visible efforts to create real design ideas. The silver-lacquered plastic frames also make an effort - but form a welcome contrast.

Less design, more utility.

The D-Max is not good for strolling, he is a working child and as such he was finely spruced up, but he just can not hide his roots. Since it is much more important that the double cabins version with plenty of room for 5 people can score. If the space provided with the opening windows is not sufficient, it can fold up the seat and thus get plenty of hold directly behind the driver and front passenger.

hold

The loading area of the D-Max with double cab is 1.55 meters long and 1.53 meters wide. Thanks to the hard top with lockable flap, it is not only ideal as a partner for self-employed people who have to transport a lot, but would like to do this protected against thieves, but also for people with dogs or hobbies who need a little more space.

Rough worker

Under the big hood of the D-Max works a 2.5 liter large twin turbo four-cylinder diesel engine. His working credo is: Rough, but powerful. Under nimble commercial vehicle nails, he approaches his task and, in addition to 163 PS, also lets 400 Nm dance to work.

He pushes powerful when needed from the speed cellar, only the built five-speed automatic screwed him a little the show. Presumably due to an enormously large converter, the reactions of the automatic to the use of force of the heavy oil burner remain a little late.

The power comes from the automatic transmission either to the rear axle, or activated via a selector switch to all four wheels. 2H, 4H, and 4L are the choices. In everyday life you leave the D-Max on 2H and save yourself the effort of the front wheels. On loose terrain, four driven wheels are the right choice and if you are going into difficult terrain or waiting for a lot of load for an off-road tour, turn the selector switch to 4L. Additional differential locks are not available from the factory for money or good words.
