Driving Report: Mitsubishi Pajero 3.2 DI-D

200 PS in the off-road vehicle veteran

The large angular five-door is one of the classics of the off-road vehicle world. In principle, the Pajero has been around for over 30 years. And Mitsubishi has done a lot to keep this model young. Despite the many missions in the deserts of this world.

Driving report of the 200 PS strong rock with automatic.

Four generations of Pajero

Four generations of reliability and the will to cross wild terrain without problems. If you want to conquer the desert, you will be happy to reach the big Mitsubishi. From 2001 to 2007 there was only one winner at the desert rally from Paris to Dakar, the Mitsubishi Pajero. Even if it is slowly being forgotten, Mitsubishi is - with a total of 12 victories - the most successful automobile brand at this historic rally. And even if Mitsubishi has vied for the favor of off-road customers with four generations of the Pajero in the last 30 years, a Pajero is immediately recognizable. The design has only been developed gently over the years.

Mitsubishi Pajero - up the wheel

The test car driven represents the upper class of the Mitsubishi model range. As a Pajero 5-door with 200 PS diesel and automatic, it is currently available in Edition 30 at a list price of € 49.990

Greenland White

Neither the pearl-effect paint in Greenland white nor the dark leather interior can hide this, however, the Pajero was born as a workhorse. Strolling around and making a good impression in front of the ice cream parlor - he leaves that to the Boulevard SUVs. There are more important tasks for the big Mitsubishi all-wheel drive vehicle. A trip to the west coast of Greenland would be just the beginning. The rough shapes, the clear lines, the large window areas and the steep edges mock the airflow. Aerodynamic miracle? Others are responsible for that. The Pajero offers its driver something that has almost been forgotten today: clarity without 360 ° cameras. Safe - hip lifestyle SUVs from southern Germany can do everything better in terms of seating position, feel and lateral support. But the pajero doesn't want to create a false cosiness. He is prepared for the serious things of off-road life. And he lets his driver feel that. He leaves lifestyle attitudes to those who get frightened with the oil pan on the first bump in the terrain.

Get in Mitsubishi Pajero and drive off

Driving report Mitsubishi Pajero - worker and buddy

In the cockpit of the Pajero, there are all signs of concentration. A few silver plastic applications and the leather on the seats and the door panels want to distract from everyday life, but the driver's awareness of the use and function of the Pajero is repeated. Solid handles on the columns remind of the possible inclination angle of up to 45 °. Two selector levers for the power transmission manifest the possibilities of the all-wheel drive and the succinct boom of the diesel leaves no doubt about the existing power.

An authentic bull for off-road use

The Pajero offers an elaborate all-wheel drive. In theory, it can also be driven in pure 2WD (rear-wheel drive) using a small knob in addition to the massive gear lever. If you switch the knob from 2H to 4H, you drive with a variable all-wheel drive. Normally, 33% of the force goes to the front axle. The variable power distribution can also distribute 4% of the power to both axes in 50H operation. Fully variable - just as you need it. Instead of the variability, the all-wheel drive can also be set to “4HLc” mode. Now the center differential is locked and the power is distributed equally to the front and rear axles. What distinguishes the Pajero from modern SUVs is the ability to switch on the gear reduction. In the “4LLc” driving mode, the overall gear ratios are shorter. In the case of the Pajero, the rear axle differential can also be locked. 4LLc and rear axle differential locked? The Pajero now crawls over hill and dale and doesn't let itself be deterred from even the steepest mountain drives. Thanks to a trailer load of up to 3.5 tons, the Pajero is not only ideal for rough terrain, but also for everyday use as a towing vehicle. And when it comes to the cool water with the horse trailer over a boggy meadow or with the boat trailer over a gravel ramp, the advantage of a real all-wheel drive becomes apparent.

Diesel bull with a penchant for onomatopoeia

Who the pajero - exceptionally - Do not steer from Paris to Dakar if you are on the road without a horse trailer or boat trailer and on a simple dry motorway - you can deactivate the all-wheel drive (from 4H to 2H) and invite the 3.2 liter four-cylinder diesel to a fuel-saving lap. But with an empty weight of almost 2.4 tons, the massive structure and the sluggish five-speed automatic, no new records can be reported on this tour. A good 9 liters are everyday life and 11 liters per 100 km are also no problem. Only four pistons work under the bonnet, but they are more than the size of a fist. The 200 hp four-cylinder turbo diesel has been heavily revised over the years and has never been more powerful than it is today. 441 Nm at 2.000 revolutions ensure power in all situations. Only the circumstances (size and weight of the Pajero) ensure a rather leisurely pace. Whereby the 16-valve diesel hums its unadorned - and loud - self-ignition song, especially when starting from cold. The big diesel goes to work with a solid and a lot of pressure, but far beyond an escalating temperament. The diesel engine and the five-speed automatic play particularly well together when you let the Pajero “roll”. Without hectic. Gladly with a bit of conviction even on bad slopes - but please without increased ambitions when chasing curves.

Mitsubishi Pajero loading room

He put something away

The long Pajero with its 5 doors can be converted into a seven-seater. The third row of seats is hidden in the floor. In a few simple steps, the huge trunk can be transformed into space for five passengers. The last row of seats is of course not as comfortable as the middle one - but the otherwise completely recessed seats are definitely sufficient for emergencies or a short stage. The huge luggage compartment is one of the long pajero's talents. Few of them offer a load volume of up to 1.789 liters. In the case of the Pajero, this space can also be used properly - a payload of up to 645 kilograms is considered proper. Even among the workhorses.

Driving Report Summary:

The Mitsubishi Pajero is added value on wheels.

Yes - € 49.990 is a proud sum. But the Pajero offers what other seven-seaters do not: the aura of a Dakar winner. In addition, the space to actually use the seven seats and the possibility of attaching 3.5 tons

At first glance, such a Pajero may look like an off-road vehicle for adventurers - but above all, it is also a real talent for the many tasks that one has to master as a family man. Especially when elaborate hobbies enrich everyday life. Or the next vacation doesn't lead to camping at the Lido, but to the desert.
