Driving Report Nissan Juke

There is no drawer for this vehicle class. What Nissan launched under the name Juke 2 years ago breaks all convention. The SUV and the coupé become a crossover that wants to combine the best of both worlds. Unlike the BMW X6, which is just such a converter on the borderlines of vehicle design, Nissan has chosen two platform sizes smaller for its creation and even manages to achieve a base price of less than € 17.000 in the basic version of the Juke. A real offer for a completely new and supposedly “modern” vehicle concept.

However, I did not drive the basic petrol engine with front-wheel drive, but was able to test the 1.6 Turbo with 19oPS and all-wheel drive.

Nissan Juke Driving Report Front

[one_third last=”no”] Torque Vectoring: In the all-wheel drive juke, an active rear axle differential is used, which enables the outside wheel to share more torque than usual. This creates a co-steering effect for the rear axle, which leads to increased agility.

downsizing: In the Nissan Juke, the Japanese rely on a 1.6l four-cylinder turbocharged engine to achieve the power of 190 hp and 240 Nm. This follows the trend towards smaller and more efficient engines. However, the advantage turns into a disadvantage with frequent performance use. This could also be seen in the consumption of the Juke. [/one_third]

Unfortunately, the interior is not as big and long as the correct model name of the crossover would suggest. If you sit relaxed in the first row and enjoy the entertaining interior design, you don't necessarily want to offer the back seat to your best friends as a seat for longer journeys.

Nissan Juke - interior of the tank

The unusual exterior design is continued inside in the form of a motorcycle tank that acts as a space divider between the driver and front passenger. The smart design gag should span the arc to active and manageable motorcycles and in the case of the Juke, of course, does not have any fuel supplies. It is more of an illustrated treatise on the fun that juke drivers should expect on country roads.  And in fact.

Nissan Juke in motion

Equipped with the 190 HP turbo engine, the Juke enough power to romp powerfully out onto the country road. As long as you don't overdo it with the digital control of the gas pedal, you can even get used to the function of the continuously variable transmission in the Juke. Nissan has understood how to program this continuously variable transmission unit in such a way that, with a little sensitive use of the gas, you do not rush forward with merciless speed orgies but, for a car of this size, jettison with confidence on the shaft of 240 Nm torque.

On rural roads you can recognize the greatest talents of this little half-breed. It's the agility created by the torque-vectoring differential, which in its perfection can almost be reminiscent of the elegance of a deep-snow skier who is just wagging from one side to the other.

While the chassis of the Juke 4 × 4 ensures unimagined agility and so the light of driving pleasure shines in front on all routes, the main headlights installed on the Juke are apparently no longer responsible for a convincing light presentation. Nissan installs so-called H4 headlights on the front of the Juke, presumably for cost reasons. The light output is not worthy of a vehicle with a total price of € 25.140, which is the price of the model being driven.

Finally, a word about fuel consumption. The combination of continuously variable transmission, small displacement, turbocharger and active chassis tuning is not suitable to set new records for saving fuel - unfortunately this is also shown by the Juke 1.6 DIG-T.

An average consumption of almost 10l can be rated as “too high”.

Nissan Juke nameplate

A powerful diesel engine with a dual clutch transmission would be the better motorization here. Nissan has both available in the group.

[toggle title=”Benefits“]The Juke in the turbo all-wheel drive version is fun, especially on country roads. The handling of the Juke is convincing across the board. Driving comfort at low speeds is absolutely fine despite the agility on country roads. [/toggle] [toggle title=”Disadvantages“]Apart from the undisputed design philosophy, real criticism can only be made about the Juke's fuel consumption. Nissan should improve here. [/tab] [/tabs] [highlight color=”yellow”]And finally ...

The Nissan Juke is a car for people with a firm self-confidence.

You can like the design of the Juke, but you can probably only love it or hate it. The opinions of colleagues have diverged too much. Some find the Juke an exciting change in all sorts of everyday streets - others find the design of elements such as the attached blinkers simply impossible.

The Juke is definitely a car for individualists - you should be prepared, however, that the top model has not only great driving fun but also great thirst.

If you decide for a Juke, you can look forward to an unusual travel partner, one of the kind who prefers a lap around the block in the evening, rather than lazily sitting on the couch.

Are you young enough for the juke?
