Driving report: Range Rover Evoque - electrified, noble and with new technical details

The Range Rover Evoque has become a bestseller at Land Rover dealers in the past eight years. Now generation two is starting and is even more focused on lifestyle.

From the beginning of April, the second generation of the Range Rover Evoque (from 37.350 euros) is waiting for customers at the Land Rover dealer. The compact lifestyle SUV is the bestseller of the British and was optically developed only cautiously - but technically completely renewed: Only the door hinges have taken over the engineers from the predecessor.

However, the substructure is still not up-to-date: Although the Evoque uses its narrow LED headlamps (with Matrix technology on request), the door handles recessed into the bodywork or the wide radiator grille, it still uses its big brother Velar 4,37 meter long Klein-Landy not its aluminum substructure. Instead, there is still plenty of heavy steel in the Evoque platform, which drives the curb weight to at least 1.787 kilograms.

Land Rover counteracts the mass of at least 1.787 kilograms with charged and mostly electrified two-liter four-cylinder engines

Land Rover counters the crowd with charged and mostly electrified two-liter four-cylinder engines. Except for the 37.350 Euro expensive, manual and front-wheel drive entry-level D150 with 110 kW / 150 PS strong diesel - available from June - set all Evoque variants on 48 volt support. The electric belt starter generator helps recuperate and boost and pushes the standard consumption of the diesel to around six, the gasoline engine to about eight liters - in practice, there are here but there are a few liters more. The four-wheel drive Evoques even disconnect the rear axle whenever possible to save fuel.

Land Rover has three power levels in each case: In addition to the basic diesel, compression-ignition engines with 132 kW / 180 PS and 177 kW / 240 PS are waiting for you; the petrol engines are with 147 kW / 200 PS, 184 kW / 250 PS or 221 kW / 300 PS available; The latter already beats in the base with 52.400 Euro. Except for the entry-level model all drive with nine-speed automatic and four-wheel drive. Both are also available for the 150-PS diesel, which then also benefits from the additional electrical power. Speaking of electric: Land Rover wants to hand over the Evoque as a plug-in hybrid with three-cylinder gasoline engine and electric motor within a year.

The compact lifestyle SUV has been optically refined but has been completely redesigned

At the first exit, we were impressed by the medium petrol engine and the most powerful diesel. The 250 PS petrol engine actually has a lot of buzz, but it has to tow two tons with two handsome guys - which you can tell when accelerating. 7,5 seconds on 100 km / h are neat, but one is not really pressed emphatically into the slightly smaller seats. Except under full load, where the four-cylinder sounds quite robust, the interior is quiet and comfortable. Rather hectic and somewhat inharmonious, on the other hand, is the converter automatic, which turns up the nine translations quite late, but at the same time sometimes does not quite get going when accelerating. This is no different for the most powerful diesel, but overall it is the smoother engine variant. Whether you need the top diesel, is questionable. He is not a Sprintstar and even with the 132 kW / 180 horsepower of the middle diesel under the hood, the Evoque for cruising should be sufficiently powerful motorized.

It is a matter of honor that - apart from the basic version - the latest version of the infotainment system with two touch screens is used, digital instruments and a head-up display are also available on request

The short wheelbase makes the SUV quite crisp and despite the heavy mass, the tightly tuned Evoque allows you to race around the corner in a sporty manner - even without the optional adaptive suspension. And of course, the Evoque also cuts a good figure, typical of Land Rover, even off-road. To make maneuvering off the asphalt even easier, the Evoque is premiered by a technology that the British first introduced to 2014: the transparent bonnet. Thanks to cameras in the radiator grille and side mirrors, the driver can see on the info display what's under the front end.

The fact that - except in the basic version - the latest edition of the infotainment system with two touch screens is used is a matter of honor, even digital instruments and head-up display are available on request. Inductive smartphone charging is not yet planned. New is the Smart Settings feature, which remembers the driver's preferences. Based on the key or smartphone recognizes the Evoque, who takes behind the wheel and takes the seat on request not only with leather, but also with high-quality fabric or a eucalyptus blended fabric seat properly; also radio, air conditioning and the massage function are adjusted according to the preferences. Also new: the digital rear-view mirror (421 Euro). If the loopholes-like small window anyway not gorgeous rear view also covered by luggage or passengers, a camera image in the mirror can be displayed at the touch of a button that allows a clear view.

The wheelbase has only increased by two centimeters, but the space available in the rear is significantly more spacious

The fact that traveling in the back seat of guests, is likely to occur at the time being only available as a four-door and not more than two-door or even convertible generation two much more common. Although the wheelbase has only increased by two centimeters, but the space in the rear is much more spacious. Even the trunk has grown, it goes about ten percent more pure than before: 591 liter swallows the luggage compartment, you work out the tripartite rear seat is it 1.383 liter. Practical: The loading opening has become noticeably wider, now even a golf bag or stroller should fit easily. On the other hand, the surcharge policy is less family-friendly: 64 sites includes the Evoque price list and those who can not resist the temptations end up outside the 60.000 Euro brand.
