Driving Report: Škoda Yeti 4 × 4 TDI

A lot of time has passed since I first dealt with him. In 2012, a group of journalists and a handful of Yeti were traveling between the Namib Desert and Mount Etjo. It was a special experience. The yeti showed its sun-tanned side and it convinced me.

You grew up, my friend.

The last time we met, you still had cute, round eyes below your headlights. You looked a little droll, you wanted to instill the protective instinct in me. In the end it was you who made me safe and above all with have fun through the vastness of Namibia you brought. Wrong world. You look more grown up today. “Those at Škoda” were probably of the opinion that five years after you were born, you should now look a little more seriously into the world of compact SUVs. Well then. I was looking forward to seeing you again!

Grown up. The Yeti in the driving report.

Really practical!

At some point, during the test drives in the Yeti, I posted this photo on Instagram:

And the only thing that matters is the title: “Probably the most practical car in the world."

[one_half] [=”notification_mark” ]The basics:
[star_list]
  • 2 weeks in the test
  • 1.900 test kilometers
  • Base price: € 18.990
  • Test car price: € 36.120

But how do I get it? What makes a car practical? In the case of the Yeti, there were 5 points that I just noticed so positively that I was convinced afterwards: Here you are driving in what is probably the most practical car in the world.

1.) Inner size

There are no useless overhangs. At 4.22 meters, the Yeti is not yet too big to lose out in the city chasing the parking spaces. But it is also not so small that five adults cannot take a longer tour.

There are “clever details” in the trunk – as you would expect from a Škoda – there is enough space to stock up on drinks for a football team or to go on holiday with four people. No problem. By the way, it was enough to two bloggers through Namibia to cart - including the necessary cool box in XXL format!

For the geeks: the Yeti is 4.22 meters long, 1.79 meters wide and almost 1.70 meters high. The trunk can handle between 310 and 1.760 liters of cargo volume. It depends on how you adjust the rear seat and whether you have a spare wheel or have a small extra space under the load compartment floor without a spare wheel.

In the front row, the driver sits upright and relatively high. But that's what is wanted. The entire dashboard appears tidy and playful. There is a comfortable armrest that can be adjusted and also enough storage options.

2.) Driving fun vs. consumption

It should be 103 kW. Together with the 6-speed dual clutch transmission, you get a fine drive train for everyday use. But that doesn't mean that the other engines are no good. The range starts with the small 1.2 liter turbo four-cylinder and goes up to the 170 hp diesel. The two-liter diesel strikes a nice balance between power and efficiency. With the 140 hp and 320 Nm, you can cruise along the motorway in a relaxed manner, start quickly from the traffic lights or, and something like that, a “practical” car should be able to do, even pull trailers through the landscape up to 1.8 tons. Anyway! The DSG remains inconspicuous and does what it does best: change gears smoothly.

In the test, the Yeti approved between 5.5 and 8.1 liters. Depending on how heavy the foot was and what was going on. Fast over the motorway at almost 200 (187) km / h? No problem. The 5.5 liters were on the eco-round and are well below the NEDC consumption. Not every car can do that in the test!

3.) Indispensable luxury

The Yeti's surcharge list offers a lot of dispensable luxury, but also contains a few temptations that can help you make your boring everyday life a little more colorful. The test car came as an “Outdoor” Ambition version. For a compact SUV, this equipment means a nice balancing act between suitability for dirt roads and everyday city life. In addition to the classic electric helpers such as ASR, ESP and electric differential lock, the Ambition version also comes with cornering lights, the driving light assistant, tire pressure monitoring, tinted windows from row two onwards, cruise control and practical shelves in the interior and trunk.

A second look at the surcharge list leads to practical extras such as the removable trash can for the door panels (€ 20), the Comfort equipment package, which then includes the rain sensor, the electrically folding exterior mirrors and automatically dimming mirrors. If you are looking for comfort in winter because you park under a lantern, you will also be happy about the heated windscreen, the heated front seats and of course - indispensable in my opinion - the bi-xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights.

The temptations don't stop there. The large panoramic roof, the modern navigation system with touchscreen technology and 30 GB hard disk, the parking steering assistant with rear view camera and for those who want to cross more than dirt roads, the engine underbody protection.

Definitely necessary in Namibia 😉

4.) Be an adult

When I was traveling in Namibia with the Yeti, his eyes were still round. He looked funny. Now - after the facelift - nothing is left of it. Serious facial expressions, the look of a reliable buddy.

It is not bad that the child's scheme has been knocked out of his face. Now you can drive through the city without hesitation even as a man. Before that it was clear: The Yeti, my wife drives it. I had no choice today. Now he no longer looks playful. Now you can drive to the office and not just to the meeting point for all husbands on Saturday morning: the washing area. This new serious look is also a real plus!

5.) Price & Value

Spending a good € 36.000 on a Yeti is not difficult. If you follow my recommendation and the 140 PS diesel, the DSG and the outdoor version, this sum is quickly reached after a few extra hooks in the surcharge list.

Now you could lean towards a Yeti without all-wheel drive. Despite the appropriate appearance, no one drives off-road. You could save the 60 kilograms for the all-wheel drive. Or? HM okay. If you really want something sensible, you can choose the Yeti Green Tec with 1.6 liter TDI, 105 HP TDI and “without” all-wheel drive. With a base price of €24.990, there is still a lot of scope for a few extras without breaking the €30.000 barrier.

A nice example of the enormous versatility of the practical Czech. On the one hand a trendy SUV, on the other hand one whose talents you can rely on.

Because a Yeti who can manage in the desert copes with everyday life with his left hand.
