Goodyear Concept Tire C100 - Big and Smart

Tire developers are also in demand when it comes to ideas for future mobility solutions. The Citroen study 19_19, for example, shows a special solution for electric vehicles.

With the concept tire C100, tire manufacturer Goodyear gives an outlook of what contribution tires could make in future mobility solutions in terms of efficiency and safety.

The tire mounted on the electrically driven Citroen study "19_19" stands out due to its diameter. This is around one meter, so it clearly exceeds the usual dimensions of standard tires, and continues to drive the “tall and narrow” principle (“tall and narrow”) of special tires for electric vehicles. Even if future e-tires will not have the impressive size of the C100, the study makes it clear that size will be an important design feature. Due to the large diameter, each individual tire section is less stressed. Such tires can therefore bear the heavy weight of electric cars better. The larger diameter also favors low rolling resistance, so that the tire helps to increase the range.

Another component of the car tire is already close to series production and has already been shown in the Goodyear concept tire IntelliGrip. Sensors in the tire recognize road surfaces and weather conditions and pass this information on to the on-board computer for appropriate driving programs. The tire could also independently check its state of wear and, if necessary, make an appointment directly with a workshop to check the tires or to change them. Tires that are monitored in real time using sensors (air pressure, temperature, tire profile, condition) are already part of everyday life for truck fleets.

Rather the chic look than the feasibility in series production is due to the increase in the number of tread blocks in the tread. The C100 has almost 100 tread blocks more than a conventional tire and is said to be particularly quiet. The rubber compound in the study is probably just an idea. It reacts like a sponge to the condition of the road. It becomes soft when wet and stiffens when dry. This should improve grip and braking properties in all weather conditions.
