Is it still worth buying a diesel?

The diesel is now something like the declared enemy of environmentalists and politicians. Many drivers love the diesel because it is more economical than a gasoline engine, emits less CO2 and has more power. Even so, the image of the diesel hass suffered greatly in recent years. Is it still worth buying a diesel engine? What speaks for it and what against it?

The payment sinken

More and more Germans are currently concerned with the question of whether the next car should be a diesel again. Among the new registrations in Germany, the proportion of cars that run on diesel has fallen significantly. This is also due to the hype surrounding vehicles with electric drives and the corona pandemic, which affected the number of registrations in 2020. A total of 820.000 diesel cars were registered in this country last year, which makes up almost 30 percent of the annual balance sheet. In 2019 it was 32 percent and a year earlier 33 percent, and the proportion of different models has also continued to decline. Since 2015, the manufacturers have simply deleted the diesel variants from more than 20 model series.

The danger of driving bans is no longer like that big time

In summer 2020, the Federal Environment Agency had good news. The risk that new driving bans for diesel cars are pending has further decreased. According to an official evaluation of the air measurement data in the individual federal states, a critical value of 2019 micrograms nitrogen oxide was exceeded in 25 in only 40 cities across the country; in 2018 it was still 57 cities. Since the values were so bad at the time, driving bans were imposed on diesel.

Does driving a diesel pay off?

Anyone who drives a diesel pays more vehicle tax per year, but less energy tax when refueling, because consistently Diesel at the filling station is more than 15 percent cheaper than petrol. However, there are more and more voices calling for the so-called diesel privilege to be abolished. Another advantage of a diesel is that it consumes between 15 and 20 percent less fuel than a gasoline engine.
