Mercedes-AMG E63 4Matic T - The balancing wheel

The E-Class has always been what you would call a true spaceship when it comes to spacious station wagons of the upper middle class. But that can also be the normal estate model of the E-Class, which was recently presented. However, only one can combine space and elegance with extensive performance: the Mercedes-AMG E63 4Matic T. Thanks to an 4.0 liter V8 and biturbo charging, this station wagon offers the brand-typical performance that culminates in 612 PS. With the fully variable all-wheel drive, the 4MATIC +, the performance does not simply fizzle out, but is converted into sheer unbelievable driving performance worthy of an AMG GT. We look at the new top athlete in the spacious upper middle class.

One of the most important improvements compared to its predecessor is certainly the optimized responsiveness of the AMG Speedshift 9-speed sports transmission. With its wet start-up clutch, a good adhesion is always ensured. In addition, multiple downshifts are now possible, so that the right gear is always ready when you need it. And so that the emotions are not neglected, the V8 spits badly from its tailpipes - thanks to the intermediate gas function.

At least 640 liters of luggage go in this power station wagon.

The exterior leaves no doubt: it is an AMG!

But that's not the only thing you get Mercedes-AMG E63 Recognize 4Matic as a T-model, but of course also on its exterior design. Starting with the A-pillar, it is designed completely independently and for the first time gets a bonnet, which, like the coupé, is embedded between the bumper and the fenders.

But what would a T-model be without a sprawling cargo area? Exactly, just a station wagon. And so the Mercedes-AMG E63 T offers at least 640 liters of cargo volume, which can be expanded to 1.820 liters. The special feature is the rear seat backrest: it can not only be folded down in a 40:20:40 ratio, but also offers a cargo function. Here you can make the backrest steeper and thus generate 30 liters more load volume.

As befits an AMG, the V8 rolls pure rock out of its tailpipes.

Under the hood: a monster of the engine

The heart of every AMG is of course the drive - and it really has it all. The V8 with a displacement of 4.0 liters delivers either 571 or 612 PS and lifts a whopping 750 or 850 Nm onto the crankshaft. The torque is between 2.500 and 4.500 RPM and is responsible for the acceleration orgies that deal with the Mercedes-AMG E63 4Matic Let T evoke. If required, the station wagon sprints to 3,5 in 3,6 or 100 seconds, making it one of the fastest space wonders around. On the other hand, the unit is also typically Swabian: in terms of consumption. Affalterbachers only give 9,1 liters as average consumption, so that only 206 g CO2 are generated per km. AMG speaks of the best value in the applicant environment, which should not be too unrealistic thanks to cylinder deactivation.

At the push of a button to the litter

The interior pleases with nappa leather and yellow stitching.

But the E63 T-model doesn't necessarily have to mimic the athlete. Thanks to the AMG Dynamic Select driving programs, you can choose between Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual and influence the character of the vehicle. Engine, transmission, chassis, steering, ESP and of course the all-wheel drive are adjusted depending on the mode, so that you can glide smoothly if necessary. The three-chamber air suspension also ensures this. Although it offers a fundamentally sporty spring-damper setup, its continuous adjustment damping is intended to create a high level of driving dynamics combined with good ride comfort. Here individual air chambers are switched on and off and react to load changes, curves, acceleration or braking processes. In addition, you can regulate yourself in three stages and specify one of the modes Comfort, Sport and Sport +. Of course, the parameter steering, which is controlled electromechanically, also ensures a dynamic driving experience. It is variably translated and offers precise feedback through the rack and pinion translation. It can also be varied in three stages.

If you see this view in the rearview mirror, you should better clear the left lane.

At the start of the Mercedes-AMG E63 4Matic Estate: The Edition 1

A particularly well-equipped special model is ready at the market launch in June 2017 - Edition 1. It is available in designo selenite gray magno or optionally in designo night black magno and is also upgraded with the AMG Night package. 20-inch forged wheels are also installed, which draw attention to themselves with a mix of black and highly polished surfaces. The Affalterbacher AMG performance seats are mounted on the inside in nappa leather with - typically AMG - yellow stitching. Of course, numerous Edition 1 lettering must not be missing in order not to obscure the exclusivity.
