NAIAS 2015: Fat things in Detroit!

Bad mood? Afflicted economic prospects? Oil price at all-time high? Everything blown away. Ice cold, the only current weather in Detroit. Otherwise radiant faces everywhere. The NAIAS 2015 was a fine example of short-term actionism in the automotive world. In the end, what the customer wants is still built. Not what would be supposedly useful and so is the NAIAS 2015 characterized by optimism, thick SUVs, fat engines and testosterone overkill screeching new sports cars. Car fans beware, now it's time again to accelerate.

NAIAS 2015 - The big things in Detroit

Those looking for a bit of fuel in Detroit are currently fueling a gallon of normal fuel for less than 1.60 $ (0,36 € / liter). While we like 99 ct for a liter of diesel, the Ami pays the equivalent of a Grande Latte Macchiatto with soy milk at Starbucks

You can then forget the savings hype of the last few years and instead freely choose the “Green Truck of the Year”.

Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie HFE - Green Truck of the Year

With the 240 hp 3.0l EcoDiesel, the Dodge Ram becomes a “Green Truck”. With 28 MPG on the highway, the truck should get by on a little more than 8 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers. One thing you can thank is the 8-speed automatic transmission. However, given the current fuel prices, EcoDiesel is likely to continue to play a minor role in the LightTruck range. The Dodge Ram is also available with a 5.7 liter V8. The American's all-purpose motorization.

German SUVs - Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé and Audi Q7

But the German automobile manufacturers can also do SUVs and consequently choose the stage of the most important auto trade fair in North America for their presentation. Mercedes-Benz brought the BMW X6 rival named “GLE coupe on the stage and the VW subsidiary Audi the second generation of the Audi Q7 to the USA.

World first: Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe

The new GLE Coupé competes with the BMW But it's not the new one that's beating under the hood 4.0"hot-inside-V” turbo from the AMG GT, but the “old” 5.5 liter V8 bi-turbo with 585 hp and 760 Nm. The make-up can then be a little more intense. The premiere model is camouflaged in innocent white, but reveals itself with cooling air openings in which well-known small cars from the same company could park sideways. Piano black air control elements encourage the air flow to flow through the radiators properly, flatter the viewer's eyes and are likely to cause deep wounds in the wallet in the event of a collision.

In addition to the “big thing”, Mercedes-Benz also brought the new “AMG sports model” GLE 450. Here the customer gets an AMG feeling at a Mercedes-Benz tariff and in conjunction with “smaller” and less coarse engines. In the case of the GLE 450 we are talking about a modest 367 hp. At the start of the “SUV Coupé”, this includes a GLE 400 with 333 hp and a diesel, which then also presents the new nomenclature in full: The GLE Coupé 300 d 4MATIC. With 258 hp and 620 Nm, powerful enough for everyday use.

World first: Audi Q7

But also Audi uses the stage for a SUV world premiere. The new Audi Q7. A car with a large grille.

Truck Mania 2015

Big boys, big toys. Trucks are the tough guys' toys and the NAIAS 2015 showed that there is no way around them in the USA. Actually, one is a little surprised that there is still no pick-up truck from BMW, Audi or Mercedes. Our premium manufacturers leave this successful auto segment in the USA entirely to the US manufacturers and importers from Japan. Such a Ford F-150, the most successful pick-up in the USA, sells almost 750.000 times in the USA. Only in 2014! That's just for clarification.

Nissan has that new titanium presented. Because the Nissan-Renault Group does not have a V8 diesel in its range, a five-liter V8 diesel from the US engine expert Cummins is packed under the table tennis hood of the Titan. 750 Newton meters allow the almost 6.20 meter long pick-up truck to fly over woods, corridors and highways. Despite the loading area, there is room for up to 6 people in the double cabin. A good 9 tons of trailer load and almost a ton of payload do the rest.

The second Japanese, who is big in the truck business, also had news for Detroit. A new Tacoma, for example. However, the Tacoma is only the “little” brother of the “Tundra” (midsize SUV) and that’s why I was drawn to the 2016 Toyota Tundra to test the fit. It then became clear why the Japanese were saving this type of automobile for the US boys. The keyword is plastic desert and shoddy workmanship.

Ford Raptor F-150

If you are really serious about the pick-up number, you choose the new one Ford Raptor, Goldfeder Mechthild wrote an article about this ...

… Part II is about the sporting innovations from Detroit…

... and we all surf like this for a long time truckscout24.de and are looking for other “big things” like excavators and stuff ...
