News: 180 km / h are enough

As the first automaker Volvo limited the Vmax of new cars. The Swedes want to set a sign for more safety.

The Swedish car manufacturer Volvo will deliver all new cars in the coming year with a maximum speed limited to 180 km / h. According to the company, the company, which belongs to the Chinese Geely Group, wants to set an example for more safety on the road.

A few years ago, Volvo had set itself the goal that no one should be seriously injured or killed by an accident after 2020 in a new vehicle of the brand. However, this goal is no longer achievable by purely technical measures on the car, says the Swedes. In addition to drunkenness and distraction, excessive speed is the main cause of serious accidents.

"A general speed limit alone is therefore not enough," says Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson. "We want to start a discussion on whether automakers have the right or even the obligation to install technology in their cars that changes driver behavior and prevents misconduct."

So far, most car manufacturers, with the exception of sports car brands, have committed to limit the top speed of their vehicles to 250 km / h. Many models with complete or partial electric drive (hybrids) are also equipped with speed limits for technical reasons, which are often also at 180 km / h.
