The emissions scandal does not only have ecological costs. The insurers are now giving new data at the previous legal price.
German legal expenses insurance companies have so far spent around 1,06 billion euros on the legal consequences of the diesel scandal that was uncovered in 2015. According to the industry association GDV, this is the most expensive damage event in legal protection insurance. The money was paid for lawyers, courts and appraisers.
The sum will continue to grow. According to the association, there have been around 60.000 new cases of car buyers since last October; the total number of those affected in May was 354.000 customers who are suing the manufacturer of their car for allegedly manipulated emissions. The average amount in dispute rose to 26.000 euros, also because many expensive diesel models such as mobile homes were added. The sum in dispute is 9 billion euros.
