E-motor for 800-volt electric vehicles

The number of e-cars with 800-volt technology will soon increase significantly. Supplier Yamaha has now developed a corresponding drive for the range giants.

In 2020, the technology group Yamaha, known for its motorcycles, started developing electric motors to order, initially in the power range from 35 to 200 kW. The units are designed to drive car models and other e-vehicles. Now the Japanese have expanded their portfolio to include a particularly compact and, with 350 kW / 476 PS, particularly powerful electric motor that will serve as a drive for future high-performance electric vehicles. Yamaha promises tailor-made solutions and short development times for customers in the automotive industry. Orders for corresponding prototypes are accepted immediately.

The new Yamaha unit is a permanent magnet synchronous motor with oil cooling and a magnet embedded in the rotor. However, the cooling method is flexible and adaptable to the needs of the customer, says Yamaha. Despite its compact design, the motor integrates mechanical and electrical components such as gearboxes and inverters. Up to four units can be integrated in one vehicle. The e-machine was specially developed for use in cars with an 800-volt architecture. Several manufacturers are already using this technology. In addition to Porsche / Audi, General Motors, Kia / Hyundai and Fiat have brought corresponding platforms to series production, and some models are already on the market that are characterized by large batteries and short charging times.
