Fight against wildlife accidents - report collision via app

Anyone who experiences a game accident can help other drivers to avoid similar collisions in the future. All you need is a smartphone.

Experts estimate that collisions between cars and wild animals occur more than a million times a year in Germany. Exact numbers are hardly known, the Federal Statistical Office only collects data on accidents with personal injuries. Since 2016, the German animal discovery cadastre has wanted to close the knowledge gaps on game accidents. Motorists can help with an accident reporting app.

The cadastre's aim is to register game accidents in Germany in a uniform and precise location. Among other things, the focus of the hazard should be determined and then defused - for example with warning signs or fences. Removing vegetation on the side of the road can help make animals more visible to drivers.

Who uses the app, tells the exact location of the accident, can give information about the cause of death of the animal and upload photos if necessary. The data is then evaluated by scientists from the University of Kiel. The app is available free of charge for Android and iOS smartphones.
