For the first time with a plug: The Lexus NX

Lexus used to stand for classic hybrid drives. The new NX now comes with plug-in technology for the first time. Other advantages are also intended to attract European customers.

With the mid-range SUV NX, Lexus finally wants to drive out of the exotic niche in Europe. The first generation presented in 2017 had immediately developed into the brand's best-selling car on the continent, and the new edition should appeal to even more customers from the end of 2021. Also thanks to the plug-in hybrid drive available for the first time.

Lexus wants to have around 95 percent of all parts replaced in the course of the NX model change despite the almost unchanged dimensions. Externally, however, the 4,66 meter long crossover appears in the well-known jagged style, even if the corners and acute angles in the sheet metal dress now seem a little less provocative. New accents can be found, among other things, at the rear, where a light band across the load compartment flap now provides more visual width. The well-known “Diabolo” radiator grille is emblazoned at the front, but it now houses eye-catching vertical struts and ends in a spoiler lip at the bottom.

The changes in the interior are more noticeable. The brand's operating system, which was previously quite switch-heavy, is being replaced in the NX by a touchscreen, which creates a tidy and more modern impression. And a voice assistant who - Mercedes sends its regards - listens to the command "Hey Lexus" is now on board. Interior LEDs in 64 colors should ensure a pleasant ambience on board, while electrically swinging doors should make it easier to get in and out.

When it comes to drive, the Toyota subsidiary not only relies on its well-known full hybrid, but is also offering a variant with a cable connection and external charging for the first time. The plug-in hybrid model operates under the name NX 450h + and positions itself at the top of the portfolio in terms of performance. A 2,5-liter gasoline engine on the front axle and an electric motor at the rear together provide 225 kW / 306 hp, which should enable a 100 km / h sprint time in around 6 seconds. The manufacturer specifies the electric range as a comparatively lush 63 kilometers.

Alternatively, the classic full hybrid drive with 350 kW / 178 PS, which can be combined with all-wheel or front-wheel drive, is also available in the NX 242h on the same combustion engine basis. In addition, pure combustion engines are also available for the markets in Eastern Europe, but these are not officially offered in Germany. For all variants, Lexus promises increased driving dynamics compared to its predecessor, which will not least result from the change to the new GA-K platform. It is stiffer and has a lower center of gravity.

The Japanese are also claiming progress with the assistance systems. In the future, for example, the NX will be able to change lanes independently if the driver activates the indicator lever and the sensors point clear. The electric door opener is linked to a blind spot warning system that warns of traffic behind you. Prices for the NX, which is positioned between the compact UX and the large RX in Germany, are not yet known. The current model is available from around 43.000 euros.
