Car bestsellers in Europe - the Clio chases the Golf

For a decade, the VW Golf - with a short break - is the most popular car of the year. Now the competition is getting closer to him.

The VW Golf throne wobbles. In the EU registration statistics for May, the permanent bestseller with 35.972 new cars is only just ahead of the Renault Clio, which has 32.803 units. According to data from the consulting company Jato Dynamics, the Wolfsburg compact car had to accept a drop in approval of 11,8 percent compared to the same month last year, while the French small car was able to increase its number by 3,2 percent.

The Renault Clio was just behind the VW Golf in May

The Golf has been the best-selling car in Europe for years, thanks in part to its expensive German customers. The Ford Fiesta was last able to push it from the top spot on the bestseller list in March 2017, before that the Golf was unchallenged for seven years. The unrivaled position could be in danger again in the future: The next round in the duel with the Renault Clio begins in autumn, when both models go into the new generation.

The other car series were significantly down in May. Dacia Sandero followed in third place with 22.234 new registrations, Skoda Octavia (22.183 units) and Fiat 500 (22.114 units) completed the top 5.
