Passenger car market - winners and losers in the first half of the year

The first half of the German new car market is over. Time for an interim assessment.

The German new car market maintained the previous year's level in the first half of 2019. However, the balance of the individual brands is less static: In addition to some winners, there were numerous losers.

The largest growth among brands with at least one percent market share was recorded by Volvo: The Swedes found 2018 customers with their freshly renewed model range and the 60s models launched at the end of 26.521 - 33 percent more than in the same period last year. There was only even stronger growth at Tesla (0,3 percent market share), which was able to increase deliveries by the new Model 3 by almost 400 percent to 6.209 units. BMW was the largest plus among German brands: 139.826 new registrations correspond to growth of 7,4 percent. The only other German brands up were Ford with 143.354 units (up 5,7 percent) and Smart with 23.567 new cars (up 15 percent).

Volvo is one of the big winners in the first half of the year

The other domestic manufacturers are on the losing side. The highest relative losses were at Porsche with a decrease of 21,6 percent to 14.111 units. Last but not least, the Stuttgart company is likely to suffer from the lack of diesel engines in the Cayenne and Panamera, and there was also a model change in the 911 sports car in March. Group sister VW also slipped: 344.194 new registrations were 4,8 percent fewer cars than in the same period last year. The balance is relatively balanced at Audi (minus 1,9 percent), Mercedes (minus 0,9 percent) and Opel (minus 0,9 percent). Nissan suffered the greatest losses among brands with at least one percent market share. The SUV models in particular no longer run as well as usual with the Japanese, so that it was only enough for 20.238 new registrations - 33 percent less than in the same period last year.

A total of 1,85 million new cars were registered in Germany in the first half of the year. Compared to the same period last year, this corresponds to an increase of 0,5 percent.
