Right: reversing in a one-way street

One-way streets are meant to be used in one direction only. Anyone who violates this - whether forward or backward - must bear any accident consequences.

Whoever drives backwards in a one-way street against the direction of travel is solely liable for the consequences of an accident, that was decided by the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court (judgment of 24.10.2017 - I-1 U 133/16). As the legal portal ra-online reports, the judges ruled that reversing in one-way streets is not permitted because of the associated danger. In the present case, a driver had tried to reverse to a parking space. On the way there he collided with a taxi leaving a taxi rank. The taxi driver had seen the illegally approaching car and stopped immediately, but could not avoid the collision. The Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court held the taxi driver, who is suing for damages, right. In contrast to the previous instance, he is entitled to 100 percent compensation. According to the court, no complicity can be attributed to him.
