Pure electric through the winter? Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

[=” ” ]mein-auto-blog is testing the Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid in everyday life. Range, reliability of technology and benefits - we look very closely!

It is the first autumn weekend in Germany, the summer seems to be over for now. The first questions about winter come up again. Although, reader Gellermann had already asked his question at the beginning of August - in the middle of the summer heat, but reader Gellermann has just continued to think. In summer, the purely electric driving with the PHEV no problem, but what happens in winter?

Winter cold and electric rides in Outlander PHEV?

Reader Gellermann is one of the many readers of mein-auto-blog, who deal with unanswered questions before buying a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. He describes his interest and tells of the usage scenario. Drive several times a day only for a few km pure electric. As he correctly states, petrol engines do not get warm on these ultra-short-haul routes. Wear and emissions therefore far above standard.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV with its combination of 121 PS petrol and two 82 PS E engines could be the perfect solution. If, yes, if the gasoline fails even in winter.

So the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV drives purely electrically in winter:

Method 1: Heating, air conditioning completely off. If you park your vehicle in a garage in winter, you will be able to live with this method. As long as the heater and the entire air-conditioning system fails, the Outlander PHEV drives purely electrically. The seat heating here ensures a little heat. However, this solution is not ideal. Depending on how warm you are packed yourself, depending on the weather, the windows fog quite quickly.

Method 2: Much more I prefer method 2 and that was also applied by us. The auxiliary heater works electrically. With the software update last winter, the indoor warm-up time has been increased from 10 minutes to 20 and optional 30 minutes. With an 30 minute warm-up time, we got the vehicle completely ice-free even in the harshest winter, preheated the interior neatly and, depending on the temperature, can run the air conditioning. If the interior is preheated enough, the engine does not start even when the air conditioning is switched on. Because it was the heater that wanted to warm up the cabin with the waste heat of the gasoline engine.

With the now possible pre-heating time of up to 30 minutes, this reaction is eliminated, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV can be moved purely electrically in winter. The absolute minimum distance was here, with use of light and heating and snow-covered road at 19 kilometers.
