Manual transmission continues to be popular: control instead of comfort

The manual gearbox is actually a discontinued model in car manufacturing. But almost half of German drivers still prefer traditional manual work.

The automatic transmission has been enjoying increasing popularity in passenger cars for years. Manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz even want to completely remove manual gearshifts from their range in the future. At the same time, there is still a large fan base for manual switching, as a representative survey of the online car exchange Mobile.de shows among German drivers. Accordingly, 46,2 percent of those surveyed said they would prefer to switch manually.

According to this survey, the percentage of users of cars with manual transmissions is even higher. According to this, 56,9 percent stated that they drive a vehicle with manual transmission. On the other hand, only 22,2 percent use an automatic drive, while 19,2 percent stated according to the survey that they currently do not drive a car at all. In relation to the group of current car users, the ratio of manual versus automatic transmission is around 72 versus 28 percent. Interesting: 55,1 percent of the vehicles listed in Mobile.de's used car market have a manual transmission and 44,9 percent an automatic transmission.

The main reasons for preferring a car with a manual transmission in the survey were:  "Control over the car" (41,5%), "Low purchase price"(31,7%) and that "Sporty driving experience" (28,2%) mentioned. For automatic fans, however, are a "More comfortable driving experience" (57,3%), "Easier starting" (42,4%) and "Low wear" (17,1%) the decisive criteria.
