Fast charging network for e-cars

There are now thousands of fast charging stations in Germany. Most of them, however, are rather slow.

The number of fast charging points for electric cars in Germany is now a good 5.000. However, only very few are really quick, as can be seen from a response by the Federal Government to a question from Parliament. According to this, only 1.369 achieve a charging capacity of more than 150 kW. The majority of the pillars are also concentrated in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, where almost half of the charging points are located.

By definition, charging stations with an output of 22 kW or more are considered to be fast chargers. Other common steps are 50 kW and 100 kW. However, many modern e-cars can already process higher outputs; the national control center charging infrastructure expects a share of 15 percent of the stock. This rate is likely to be significantly higher for new registrations. The current record holder is the Porsche Taycan with 270 kW, theoretically up to 350 kW would be possible for the sedan. The level of charging power corresponds directly to the charging speed: If it doubles, the waiting time at the column is halved.

The Federal Network Agency currently has a total of 38.441 public charging points across Germany. These include 33.609 so-called normal charging points below 22 kW.
